Been watching this on TV today. Course is interesting enough but doesn't seem to be prepped like a typical USGA event course, some of the short par 4s have forests of unrepaired divots in the landing areas, not good. Also the telecast itself is very much a standard Golf Channel Champions Tour production and not what I would expect of NBC in a USGA championship. None of the usual NBC voices so far. Instead we get Papa, Wadkins, Cook et al.

They lost a bunch of cameras in the storm last night, along with a few towers.

I gonna guess the ground crew had more important thing to do besides filling divots this morning.

I wonder if Paul Runyan would agree with this.

Paul Runyan.  Isn't he that guy that got lucky in a tournament way back when they didn't play real golf?  Dude was a bum who didn't belong out there.  Probably some daddy rich trust fund baby who bought his way in.

(Did I do it right?  This internet tough guy thing is harder than it looks.)

I want to make a couple of points about the tournament

A storm took out cameras, towers, scoreboards, trees, etc.  They were lucky to even hold the event. Winds were recorded at 96 mph and at one point there were 180,000+ people in Omaha out of power The crew started working between 3 and 4 am to clean up and prep the course.

The big name announcers are headed to the Open, which is overseas.

I worked 4 days on a tee box and all I overhead was how great, difficult but fair the course was.  For once the greens were not burnt out and they were at a fast but fair speed.  Also, the rough was very thick but not up to your knees.

The only complaint that I heard was how difficult it was to walk.  It apparently has more up and down than a very famous course that has an annual tournament (shall we say some place in the south).  On camera and on the record, they would not compare to that very famous course because they want to be invited back to that tournament.

The pictures of the damage to the course from that storm were amazing. The big name announcers on NBC/Golf Channel rarely if ever on the the Champions Tour broadcast. When the women's US Open was played NBC/GC used the same LPGA announcers minus Judy Rankin that they do for regular LPGA Tour events.

As for this week none of the PGA Tour NBC/Golf Channel announcers that are broadcasting the Open Championship are going to the UK due to the C19 travel restrictions. The Open Championship is going to be broadcast remotely from Connecticut.

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/british-open-2021-television-nbc-golf-channel-remote-broadcasting

Due to travel restrictions imposed by the United Kingdom and the R&A amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NBC Sports will be handling most of its coverage of the 149th Open Championship on NBC, Golf Channel and Peacock remotely.

“There’s still a quarantine in the U.K., so from the R&A’s perspective it would greatly help them for us to reduce our footprint, very similar to what the players are having to go through,” said Tommy Roy, NBC’s longtime lead producer for its golf coverage.

NBC has done just that. The network usually sends a crew of 250 people on site for its tournament coverage. At this year’s Open, a mere 24 will be on the grounds at Royal St. George’s.

.

.

.

According to Roy, by sending a smaller group NBC had a better chance at obtaining a waiver from the U.K.’s 10-day quarantine for travelers from the United States. So realizing they could tap into the R&A’s global broadcast feed, most of NBC’s on-air talent—including play-by-play announcer Dan Hicks and lead analyst Paul Azinger, along with Justin Leonard, David Feherty, Terry Gannon and Gary Koch—will be working, and watching, from NBC Sports’ Connecticut headquarters. Most of the production team, including Roy, will be working from the Stamford base as well.

Here's a few pictures I took on Saturday. Saw several tree limbs down, many of which were pretty good sized.  There were some camera towers that were down and some scoreboards.

Several holes have tee boxes that are on one hill, then the hole goes down hill to the landing area only to climb back up another hill to the green.  The second picture is from the landing area on hole 9, looking up the hill towards the green and clubhouse.

The last picture is looking back from beside the 18th green towards the 18th tee box.  We were standing there waiting for a group to finish before we were going to start heading back to beat the rain.  The horn blew just as the group we were waiting on got to their approach shots.   IMG_3094.JPG.2ecc5eb685eab088503901328b442503.JPG

Why would they care or why would this be a feather in any course's cap?  ANGC doesn't have the market cornered on hills.

It's not an irritant but I am surprised the Senior Tour gets priority for TV rights over the Korn Ferry Tour. I used to love watching the Nike/Web.com tour on golf channel because you got to see young up and comers with game. I guess I am just surprised the Senior Tour pays as much as it does and has a full schedule (maybe it would be better to just do the majors and like 3 other tournaments). This is not me trying to reshape the world here but Alex Cejka is cleaning up out there, currently, and he had 1 win on PGA Tour and like 4 on the Euro tour. I'm sure Tommy Tolles is a nice guy but I don't see myself racing to the TV to watch him play.

I am sure someone will school me on the economics of this and that there are more people that would rather watch Jay Haas and Esteban Toledo play golf than Greyson Sigg and Stephan Jaeger but that is shocking to me. Also, the Senior Tour's purses are 3x that of the KFT and 2x the LPGA but maybe this is all backed up by the Sponsors. However, if for some reason the PGA Tour is siphoning off money to prop up the Senior Tour, that makes no sense. KFT, yes, because that is your minor league but not as a merit based pension for the older gents.

TLDR - happy to be shouted down about having a bad take on the PGA Tour Champions

Everything you said!!!!   Also it is generally a "hoax" - they ride carts but substantially "hide" them from the TV coverage.  Until the past year or so, they NEVER would have graphics that stated the actual length of holes, but the cheerleaders (I mean announcers) would absolutely marvel at "how far down there" slappy Chris Dimarco hit his drive (I promise you he bombs it all of 240).....I heard Freddie Couples say on his radio show that the typical course is actually set up to play about 6,750 which ain't much!!  Give me the "girls" anyday!!

Over the 4 days that I worked, I saw only 1 cart.  The rest walked.

Also, I worked on hole 10 which was a 500 yard par 4. Not a very easy course to play.

I attended the 2018 US Senior Open at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.  Terrific day, terrific course, not very crowded.  The USGA ran this tournament very well and didn’t have to trick up the course or burn the greens out to play tough.  I’ve recently played The Broadmoor East course twice and it can be brutal.  I’ll definitely attend a US Senior Open again when opportunity arises.

In a standard PGA Tour Champions event yes. Not in a USGA or PGA of America run event unless requested by a player. The PGA Tour has nothing to do with how the USGA or PGA of America conducts their championships. A senior event or otherwise. Scott Verplank and John Daly have requested the use of a cart in past USGA/PGA senior championships. Daly gets to have a cart in the regular PGA Championship. He got stuck in the sand at Kiawah with his cart.
