Jane Park & Pete's daughter

As a Canadian, I'm not really familiar with the US medical system.

I assume Jane & Pete have family medical insurance that can cost $6000-$14000+ per year?

I assume the household income is too high to be eligible for any medical coverage subsidies???

Would the family be out of pocket for some medical bills that aren't covered by insurance?...I assume based on how much coverage is bought that some medical bills might not be covered.

Seems like Grace will be hospitalized for 3+ weeks.

Get well young Grace.

The gofundme doesn’t sound like it’s got anything to do with medical costs. It was only a $10,000 goal to help out with expenses while staying in a strange city to be with the baby. Three plus weeks in a hotel adds up and neither will be on tour.  As to the medical, your plan usually has a deductible (which varies dependent on what plan you buy) and then the vast majority of costs are covered as long as the hospital is within your insurance network or it was an emergency admission, which is probably the case here.

Not yet eligible for Medicare so we pay for our own coverage: $2,000/month, $14,000 deductible! In other words, we pay for all at this point as we are fairly healthy and only get this insurance so that we don't lose our house in case of illness or accident. Welcome to America. I will say that Biden's new plan allows the govt to pay 1/2 of that $2,000 month for a period of time which is a help but ridiculous that it comes to this. PS: In the last couple months, husband has had 5 teeth extractions and onward to a rebuild of his sinuses and implants. NOT covered by our insurance so the bill will be approx. $20,000 I'm told. There goes my facelift!

Wow...$24,000/yr...yikes.

I assume there are many many Americans who cannot afford this.

My friend who is at the director level at a major fin'l institution in NYC...said even though the company is subsidizing/paying for some of his family's medical coverage...he is still shelling out an add'l $8000 to fund the coverage.

I was reading on another forum how a guy in his late 40's was living with his 70 something parent's in their home....and then found out it was in foreclose and ready to be repossessed by the bank.

I was wondering how people in their 70's wouldn't out right own their house.

Then realized that maybe someone had medical issues and they had to take out 1st and 2nd mortgages to fund the medical bill(s)....and then could no longer afford the monthly mortgage payments.

Yup...major dental work is expensive.

Many folks have had to file for bankruptcy when medical bills are outta control. It certainly seems unfair to work your whole life paying for your little piece of Americana then you have a heart attack or are involved in an accident and it's gone. Don't get me started on 'pre-existing' conditions, ie, an excuse for insurance companies to never pay up. My 30 year old daughter had to have emergency surgery while out of town. She did have her own insurance policy w/a $10,000 deductible which she paid. Now, 2 years later, the insurance company won't pay up and the hospital sent her a bill for $32,000. She's a single gal trying to do the right thing and be independent. 😡

How sad/brutal.

A large part of the problem is over usage and excessive treatments/tests.  People are essentially "insuring" someone putting a band-aid on a minor scrape.  Or having your car "insured" against an oil change, a scratched seat in the interior.  There's no direct link between payor and making a decision on what to buy.  The insurance companies don't care about cost control --- they just charge the pool more and more each year.

IMO, if you believe society deserves healthcare coverage then just nationalize the system and have a single payor.  A private alternative will still exist or be developed for those that want better care, faster service, etc.  The ACA hasn't reduced healthcare costs at all, as the pubic-private hybrid model just results in an industry where inefficient suppliers are kept in business and rates are set by lobbying efforts, not free market competition (which typically drives down prices over time).
