I used interlock grip on everything when I first started. Now I don't and not sure why. It feels weird with my wedding ring.

Weird that no person ever has said something about iron covers to me on the actual course.

Wait until you play in a tournament. If you get put on the slow play clock and have covers on your irons, I think they go direct to two-stroke penalty! 🤔

Iron covers and interlocked.

When I sell my equipment, that’s when my playing partners say “I should get iron covers”.

Sorry, but this is an idiotic comment.

I see more slow play from people lasering something 50 times, over-analyzing their lie or what they want to do, inability to make a quick committed decision on the club to use, taking multiple practice strokes, standing over the ball for 45 seconds, hitting a bad shot and complaining about it and in general playing bad golf under pressure.

Of course, it is the three seconds to put the iron cover back on and it was careless of me to suggest otherwise.  But, the chances are that I am waiting on you.

Lots of defensiveness towards jokes about iron covers..

I learned with interlock and have experimented with other grips but always come back to it. Reverse overlap for putting.

Because anti-iron cover comments get old after a while and are stupid.  There are a lot of posts of someone clutching their pearls about a nanometer scratch on their driver or fairway wood.  If people want to protect their irons I fail to see any difference.  People want their things to look nice, especially when they paid a considerable amount for them.

Three seconds? You must be in the top 1-percent of the iron cover crew. Generally, iron cover crewmen both misplace their covers and leave their wedges behind at the previous green. I know from sad experience.

This is not that hard.  I grab my club, remove the cover while walking to the ball and put it in my pocket, hit, put the cover back on while walking to the cart.  This isn't rocket science and there is practically no added time.

I don't leave clubs.  When I walk up to the green to putt, I lay my club down, if I missed regulation and needed to pitch/chip, with glove and hat in the direct path I am going to take back to the cart.  I don't use covers on my wedge because I know it will be abused and is easy to replace (glide 3).  I am easily the fastest in my regular group.  Two are extremely slow and it is just maddening.  If you develop good habits, then slow play doesn't happen.

Another probable issue is the people who clean their club before putting it in headcover/bag.  I clean clubs after the round, so not an issue.  It is annoying when people finish a hole and stand there cleaning their stuff.  Inconsiderate.

Learned to play with interlock, almost ripped the pinky off my right hand in a boating mishap years ago and couldn't grip a club for a month.

Couldn't play unless I used Vardon grip, been Vardon since.

My son uses iron covers on his Vokey wedges only, buys  a new set every year and gets good coin for his used ones. As a scratch player he just takes their money on the course when they make fun of his covers I've noticed.

To paraphrase what you have said - I apply common sense with a method that ensures I am not frequently annoying to players following my group.

Kudos to you but the stigma comes from the self absorbed cretins who couldn’t maintain pace carrying 3 clubs in a pencil bag with no headcovers. Proportionately, the iron headcover use amongst said cretins is very high hence the stigma.

On the subject of the actual thread, interlock all day for me. My hands are disproportionately large and strong vs my forearms thanks to 20+ years of work with hand tools, multiple house renovations and lots of gym work that requires grip strength. The interlock prevents me getting handsy with it and I can’t hit fades with a Vardon grip.

To the OP, if you feel comfortable varying grips based on shot and it works, do it! Providing you’re within that average window of variance that the non-outlier tour players exist in, you have a very good chance of making it work. It’s like swing plane/path. The closer you are to ‘neutral’ the easier it is to be consistent.
