Mevo Outdoor Pitch Shots: Are These Numbers Plausible?

Recommended Posts

I only had a few minutes to mess about with my new MEVO (not plus) today but the first thing I tried was hitting a few pitch shots with my 52 degree gap wedge.

One shot I deleted from the data because I kind of mishit it. Actually, I skulled it across the green about ankle high. So no data there.

The other three shots had an average ball speed of 39mph, launch angle of 49deg, carry distance of 27yd, spin of 7,564rpm and apex height of 29ft. Clubhead speed does not register on such short shots. I did not put reflective stickers on my Pro V1x practice balls.

The distances were spot on. I paced off all three and they were plus or minus a yard each time. Apex height of 29ft sounds a bit high but I'd have thought they went somewhere over 20 feet anyway. But the launch angles just seem preposterous. Unless I was seriously adding loft at impact there's just no way to launch a 52deg wedge at 39mph and get a launch angle much 30deg, is there? I think the short game launch angle numbers are not good.

The one I'm not sure about is the spin. Actually I'm pretty sure a spin of 7K+ is impossible at such low clubhead speeds. But I don't have a good feel for that.

FWIW my technique is "use the bounce" with a slightly open clubface, ball near the middle of a narrow stance and not much wrist set in the backswing.

Good point. The MEVO does have a setting for "less than 30 yards" but I think that's more about telling it where to look for the ball rather than using different algorithms.

It occurred to me that in my initial tests around the practice chipping green with Pro V1x shag balls, I was hitting off a (very slight) upslope. So that not only affect launch but the MEVO was in effect sitting slightly below the ball (down the slope) maybe an inch or two.

So today I found a dead level spot on the driving range and tried a few longer pitch shots and full GW shots. Again I had to eliminate one skulled shot and a couple chunked/duffed ones from the data . This time I was hitting range balls not real balls.

Aiming at a 30yd target my average spin and launch were 7,540 and 40.3, respectively, with 41mph ball speed and 32yds carry.

Aiming a 40yd target spin and launch were 7,682 and 39.5 with 48mph ball speed and 41yds carry.

Normally I'd expect a full swing GW to go about 90yds but today those shots only averaged 68yds. Don't know if that was due to mishits (couple of them were slightly fat) or if the range balls just don't go very far. Out on the course later I was hitting normal distances with that club.

Full swing GW spin and launch were 8,039 and 35.8 with 65mph ball speed.

I'm still finding 7,500rpm and 40deg launch on a shot that travels 30-ish yards with a 52deg club kind of unbelievable. But judging from where the balls landed versus my targets, the carry distance estimates seem correct. Guess the next thing to do is try some Pro V1x with the little stickers on them for better spin readings.

That is a very high launch for a full GW if the numbers are accurate.

as for the driving range numbers, is it possible they are limited flight balls and that’s why they were shorter?
