The One Tip That Saved Your Game

Recommended Posts

I spent a lot of money of in person lessons and 2 years ago, i had 20 of them in a package.  Got a bit better but not really what i thought as far as progression.

On a whim a month ago, i took two online lessons on Skillest and the pro had me work on setup, alignment and keep my trail arm loose.

So the old adage about keeping your arms nice and loose helped me tremendously.

I wouldn't say any one tip has "saved my game", but making a proper pivot is truly a game changer, broadly speaking. If I find myself playing poorly, I can usually focus mainly on that and get back to "normal" relatively quickly. The proper pivot seems to set up so many other elements of my swing, especially timing.

For me it was making sure the arms, hands arrive at the ball the same time my body is over the ball.  I used to spin out and get my body heading towards the target while the arms were coming through.

Really help my angle control and accuracy.  It's what I think and feel, it really does work for me.  One other is keeping my trail elbow in, I probably lose power but it helps me return the club back to the ball.

Lots of golfers out there that hit their driver fine but really suck with their iron game.  Ego thing for sure.  The best tip I ever got was from my coach when I was on my college team.  He told me to work on specific things that I needed to get better at and not to pound golf balls all day with no real purpose until my back and hands got sore.  He also said that the fastest way to lower my handicap is to spend more time on and around the greens practicing.  My game really changed after that that aha moment.

I totally agree but I do have a smart azz buddy who only hits his drives at the range.  Someone asked him once why do you only hit driver, he replies it's called a driving range not a chipping or iron range....

Yeah he's that guy.

I don’t recall ever to receive a tip that turned my game around. It has mostly been small increments, two steps forward, one step back etc. But my wife recently attributed regained solid driving with a tip from me, which was: Try to keep both arms straight back and through. She has a tendency of replacing some of the turn with a sway and this helped.

I give tips to people whose game I know well from time to time. Sometimes it is not productive at all, other times it gets them back on their track … and then there are a few, rare times where they actually aquire a new skill. Most of the time on the course, and and if so only when they are lost.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
