Give yourself some credit...what are you proud of this year?

Recommended Posts

I practice hitting balls in a big field near my house where I have distances all memorized. Hit 4-5 balls, go find them and hit again. There is usually 1 that gets away or thinned or pushed or whatever, been that way for years. I have had a couple of days where when I went to pick them up where all the balls were so close together I could’ve covered them with my towel, even once after hitting 5 balls with driver they were all within a square yard of each. I have been trying to accomplish this forever and I finally did.

I've had more legitimate chances at eagle so far this year than the last 5 years combined (at least).

For me the biggest achievement is getting my first hole in one. Other than that, I would say just being able to shoot in the 70's with not much range time going on. Just settled into my game a lot more and really trying to game plan the round and working on my course management better.

I have brought my index down to 12.3, from 16 last year, despite playing half as much and much less, but far more focused range time and lessons with a pre-defined long term focus.  I have my first child on the way, due in December, so i really want to get my index to 9.9 or lower before the end of this season.  Next year its only likely to go in one direction and that isnt down.

I will still be able to play, but it wont be as much and midweek practice is likely to be more difficult/impossible.

I feel like I've gained confidence in my putting this year. I started using the line on the ball and stepping into it the way Malaska teaches and it has made a big difference for me in my results and my mental state over putts. I now feel like I have something to DO when I'm putting rather than just thinking about all the things NOT to do.

My next goal is to apply the same approach to my long game.

Not much to be proud of scores wise, but I have started working hard to correct some long time flaws that always have held me back, it's been frustrating but I'm starting to see some signs. The flaws are still there but I had a semi lightbulb moment on the next steps and I'm starting to see the changes in my full swing. Getting the proper diagnosis and switching up my practice to ingrain the changes is going to pay off, just going to take time. I played 9 the other day and it was the best I've hit my irons in a long time.

Also putting it to the test and finally getting back to competing after a while later this summer.

I did this same thing over the winter. Told my instructor "no major changes, but let's reduce flaws that cause poor shots to creep into a round". 4 lessons from October to February. First focused on setup. Next lesson was backswing. Next was downswing. Next was reassessment of everything we worked on.

I told him I wanted more solid matchups. We explored some small.tweaks on some key positions. The work has led to 3 sub par tournament rounds and an overall 74 stroke avg. I do have an 82 in there. That was the anomaly round. Cracked my driver on the range and didn't know it until the 4th or 5th hole. Got super aggressive thinking I was going to shoot 67 out of the gate.

My desire to better key matchups paid off bigly. Biggest keys were around setup and downswing. I get too upright and squatty in setup. I also get too lateral in the downswing. Small tweaks to both have really paid off.

7 tournaments - 2 wins, 2 seconds, 1 3rd, 1 4th.

After a complete swing overhaul over the past 4 years and a lot of work on my short game, I'm finally back to a mid-70's average. Low round of even par 70 and highest an 82. I'm keeping the ball in play and relying on short game to hide my weakness (iron play).

Currently working on improving my irons - hoping to get a least one under par round this summer. We will see how it goes.

Best score for the year came just recently.  Shot 71 at Diamond Bar GC.  My index has been trending down this year.  I've been playing more lately and my putting's been fuego.  My driver is finally coming around as well.  Now if my irons and chipping would catch up I think I could maybe get down to a 2 or better.

Made some pretty big swing changes in about 4 months time.  And not only did I make the swing changes, but I am quite good about troubleshooting the issues when they come up.  And yes, my scores have improved, so I'm not just playing golf swing, I'm also playing golf.

It's been a really rough year, so it's probably wearing sunscreen during every round. Yeah, I got nothing.

At least you are still getting out on the course! Melanin is good for you - or at least that's what science keeps telling me.
