MP20 MMC to ???

Recommended Posts

So the end of last year i picked up some MMC’s. Not long after that I changed jobs and didnt have time to play. Im closing in on 55 and want to play some senior amateur events next year so i think im about ready to get back at it. Ive also always been fairly physically active until this last year as well but this year has really slowed me down. Long and short of it is i want to keep playing but really have much less desire to work on my golf swing. Did that for 40 years and my body is starting to pay for it. Anything new coming down the pipe as far as a GI/ Players iron, (more emphasis on GI now.) The catch. Is my miss is hard left so minimal offset is going to be a high priority?

I picked up a used set of Srixon 785s with steelfiber shafts on a bit of a whim and they quickly knocked the mp20 mmcs out to the bag - love them, and can be had for a good price used (they seem to come up pretty regularly on the forum here).  Mid irons launch so easily, and they look great (very similar to the mmcs) at address.

I was fitted for mmc’s and the jpx 921 forged were a close second.   The 921s were more forgiving but I preferred the mmc’s feel.

I have mmc20 and they are quite outstanding in my eyes. My best round was achieved with them. The feel wnd workability with them is amazing. They are really forgiving for their size as well... if your asking what you should switch into as far as a gi iron though the 21 forged mizuno seem pretty great. Apex21 or 19 even. To be honest the mmc are so forgiving though. I dont practice i can just jump on the course with them and shoot my usual scores.

Calllway has some pretty good deals on the pre owned right now so the Apex21 is on the list to hit.

MMCs are very forgiving for a players cavity. I play them now, played blades before. Don't even think about going anywhere else.

For true GI without offset the answer is 921 jpx hot metal pro.  The forged are very forgiving for what they are but they’re not truly GI irons.  Demo both and decide for yourself, but if you really want forgiving irons hot metal pro would be the choice.

This is also how I feel.  Great clubs.  Look good, forgiving, slip through the turf nicely, workable if required, can flight down and I've run out of nice things to say.

This is pretty correct. Bonus points for the fact that you can bend them weak, take even more offset out, and add some bounce to Mizuno irons, which play pretty weird in the long irons for me with their thick sole and low bounce. No issue with the blades being low bounce but I absolutely hated the HMB for this reason. Had an MP20 MB 6-PW and HMB 4 and 5 and sold them right quick because of the long iron hatred.

Went to Roger Dunn for the first time in probably 9 months to hit some stuff and couldn’t believe how low the inventory was. I did hit the Callaway CB with the MMT in it as well as a zx7. As much as i hate to say it I’m not seeing any reason to go away from my MMC’s. Guess ill just have to work on my golf studio!

Very little difference in “forgiveness” for whatever it’s worth. I do agree with one of the above comments regarding shaft. Might be worth doing a retrofit and grabbing some pulls off BST if something makes them a bit easier for you.

I have the 4 iron so I’m tempted to soft step them, weaken the loft a touch and flatten them a few degrees. That way i can gain a little distance and take what offset there is out. Also wouldn’t be a big deal to put them back they way they are if it doesn’t work out

MMC's are plenty forgiving. The HMB's are a complete failure, performance-wise, compared to any other Mizuno release. Anyone that "fit" into them is likely better off in the HM Pros, or Forged.

I love Mizuno irons, and have since high school. But those HMB's... are s***. I expect a much improved version with the 22's. Not hard to make something better, actually.

We are in complete agreement. I would go as far as to say it's one of the worst irons I've tried in years.

I’m an outlier I guess.

I loved the HMB’s. I own 5-PW.

i didn’t care for the MMC or the 921 Tour as much, in fact  I liked the 921 Forged better than both and the HMP the most out of the 921 series.

The HMP I probably could play just as well as the HMB, but I liked the HMB feel better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe it’s the low bounce that I like. I do play my wedges with 7* GW and 8*  SW, I will swap out the SW with a 10* bounce depending on conditions.

The wide sole doesn’t bother me. At first it was a bit out of the ordinary for me since I’ve played multiple Mizuno Blades since 2000, with Wilson staff and Hogan Apex before that.

On paper the HMB isn’t much different than a set of 716 T-MB’s that I had for a short while….,.,.. I didn’t get along with them. I felt like the T-MB performed best if a dug into the turf, and that’s not how I play unless the lie calls for it.

I will say that I’m more of a sweeper than a digger for the most part, perhaps that is why I get along with the HMB and HMP so well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In true WRXer fashion i was looking at the PXG site and saw you can still get Gen 2 with the MMT shaft for basically the cost of the shaft. I do know i love the fairway wood and hybrids I already have. Ordered 5-7 of the P and 8-P in the T. If they dont work out they will just turn into a back up set. Kind of hard to pass up for $600
