PING G430 - Are They Finally Going Back to a Carbon Fiber Crown?

It's not surprise that PING didn't go with the G420 naming scheme and opted to go for G425. But with recent trademarks they have registered, it's looks like PING's next release will be going back to the G4X0 naming scheme by going with G430 (https://trademark.trademarkia.com/g430-90203914.html).

Another interesting trademark that PING has recently registered is "Carbonfly Wrap"(https://trademark.trademarkia.com/carbonfly-wrap-90740454.html). PING are known for their "Dragonfly" structure on thier titanium crown, which allows them to keep the metal as thin as possible while still providing the required strength/rigidity.

Could this mean that PING are finally going the way of some other top OEMs by using a carbon fiber crown? What's everyone's option on this and will PING loyalists miss that signature metallic sound?

Ping's Original Rapture driver had a carbon crown and it was an incredibly good club, including sensational soft/muted impact sound feel.

One other member mention that when I first posted this. I had no idea they used a carbon crown before. That's why I changed the title to ".. Going Back to a Carbon Crown" haha

Hope they keep an all titanium crown in the mix.  Titleist and Ping are the only two major OES's left standing without a current carbon crown.  It's nice to have options.

I had no idea they did one on the old rapture. Let me rephrase by saying on their modern drivers 😅 hahah

From what I took way in discusions with their engineers is that there is no structural or MOI advantage to a carbon crown. Of course Ping have always focused on performance first and foremost, so I don't think sound is part of the process of design. However, that being said, they obviously understand that sound is important to customers so they are now adding hotmelt as an option.

The Original Rapture was in Ping's line for 2 years before being replaced by the Rapture V2. The V2 did not have the carbon crown and was more or less the same as Ping's Ti drivers before and since that time (loud). I heard the Original Rapture with carbon crown was expensive to produce, and that is supposedly the reason Ping went back to all titanium for the V2 model.

Am I the only person in the room that actually prefers the sound of Ping drivers over the muted, dull, dead carbon drivers?

I prefer the sound/ feel of a titanium driver, but there is defiantly room for Ping to turn the volume down a couple notches.

Actually, when Ping's carbon top Original Rapture soft/muted impact sound was not popular with lots of players who wanted to hear/feel a louder sound at impact. It was the same for Callaway's Razr driver, some players liked its soft impact sound/feel, others prefer a louder noise.

I think everybody has always liked the soft-muted sound of a well struck iron shot. Back in the days of persimmon woods all driver shots has a soft-muted sound. When metal drivers were first introduced they were relatively small heads made of steel and did not have impact sound/feel much different from the persimmon drivers they replaced. As Tititanium drivers emerged , and the head size became bigger and bigger, the impact sound was louder than anybody had heard before from a golf club and over the years some companies have tried to make driver impact sound softer, less tinny, less hollow.  I think players accustomed to hitting lots of solid iron shots prefer muted sounding drivers (because the impact sound is more similar to a well struck iron shot). But there are some great players, even Tour pros , who don't mind a loud sounding/hard feeling driver. So, it's a personal preference thing.

It was def more to produce, but it also offered no performance or MOI improvement so they did away with it.

How does one define "performance "? Sadly, golf industry company employees tend to use computer generated numbers such as MOI.

In reality, appearance (looks) and feel (sound) are major factors  contributing to how a club actually performs.
