PING G430 - Are They Finally Going Back to a Carbon Fiber Crown?

How does one define "performance "? Sadly, golf industry company employees tend to use computer generated numbers such as MOI.

In reality, appearance (looks) and feel (sound) are major factors  contributing to how a club actually performs.

For Ping its MOI, ball speed, launch, consistentcy, and how can they make their clubs as forgiving as possible. That's been their mantra since Karsten came out with that funny looking anser putter and even crazier looking Eye 2 iron.

I just hope they remove the closed face.  I have tried 3 separate 425 max heads and all sit what looks like 2* -3* closed to my eye in the neutral setting. If I open it up in the large — setting the flight is too low for me.

Even in the 12* head. Nothing but snap hooks for me.  Glad there are still max type driver options like Xtreme/Rad XB that sit very square to open

If they could have stuck with the 400 max face angle I’d be gaming a 425.

Ping's Original Rapture driver had a carbon crown and it was an incredibly good club, including sensational soft/muted impact sound feel.

Agreed. No clue why they never went back to it.

Improve the sound and get rid of the ugly turbulators.

Don’t care about the sound, I’ll hotmelt it.
But get rid of the turbulators, and I’ll buy one without even testing it.

The original Rapture was the best feeling/sounding driver I’ve ever hit, but it was not forgiving at all. It would be  nice to see Ping incorporate that feel and sound into a current model.

It's not surprise that PING didn't go with the G420 naming scheme and opted to go for G425. But with recent trademarks they have registered, it's looks like PING's next release will be going back to the G4X0 naming scheme by going with G430 (https://trademark.trademarkia.com/g430-90203914.html).

Another interesting trademark that PING has recently registered is "Carbonfly Wrap"(https://trademark.trademarkia.com/carbonfly-wrap-90740454.html). PING are known for their "Dragonfly" structure on thier titanium crown, which allows them to keep the metal as thin as possible while still providing the required strength/rigidity.

Could this mean that PING are finally going the way of some other top OEMs by using a carbon fiber crown? What's everyone's option on this and will PING loyalists miss that signature metallic sound?

Great catch. Wonder if they're making the dragonfly pattern from 811 titanium like it is now and molding composite around it and the side skirts - or something similar to that? Basically updated version of the rapture structure.

The OG Rapture was amazing sounding.

I've played multiple rounds with players using the 410 models, and those actually sound pretty solid. The 425s were a huge step back in sound (I'm saying this as a huge Ping fan having played their stuff extensively through the years, i5s for 11 or 12 years). Even though my current bag doesn't show the brand too much love, they're one of my favorite companies.

I just found the 425 drivers to be obnoxiously loud and distracting.

If Ping makes their next drivers with a carbon crown, and if the sound is anywhere close to my current driver, I may return to using their big stick. It'll be tough to out perform the ES TD, but Ping will always have a place in my bag.

You can easily order a head that sits more open. They sort through the heads and look for ones that could be more open and closer to your request.

G425 LST is a masterclass in performance (for me).   Love this driver!

Agreed. Part of the reason I love Ping is the additional head weight. Originally was gaming to Sim2 this season and could not feel the head at all through the swing. Have gamed Ping since the G30 and was happy to to get back with the G425 LST. It is just so reliable swing  to swing. Ping is the standard when it comes to woods in the industry. Made the mistake of thinking otherwise early season.

I feel like the people who complain about the turbulators have probably played the adams clubs with the slots on the top of the fairways. Or even the versa odyssey’s. Would even go as far as probably gaming a putter that could be dinged up but doesn’t phase em at all. Oh these turbulators tho, that’s the line in the sand that cannot be crossed. Some real asinine thinking, knowing something benefits you, but you're really over here trying to fight yourself FOH.

Ummm - the new structure of the fairways and hybrids improved them, if applied to the driver, the turbulators become unnecessary.

Potentially, we don’t strike the driver as we would a fairway/hybrid. It might very well be phased out tho

Not sure why you removed your quote to me earlier  but I can take a guess.

Boy oh boy talk about a self righteous post just because someone doesn't like the way something looks

No never played those clubs you mentioned and my putter isn't dinged up either. I take care of my equipment and I've been playing for years.

Guess since we're just throwing things out there, those turbulators looks like something you'd see on a infomercial driver..😏

It’s asinine thinking you know people as you speak so negatively of them. Personally, I still play my old G20 driver and it’s great. My putter is older, but it’s pristine.

Ive never played an Adam’s driver with a slot, nor an Odyssey Versa putter. So what irritates you about me liking a clean crown without turbulators? Shouldn’t I be able to have my own personal preference as to what I spend my own money on?

I’m not pocket watching. Plus the g20 is a great driver as well. I’ve played my Nike vr tour for 8 years before i decided to upgrade and grab the g400 (without research) and I based it off of the impression of the only ping driver i hit.
All I’m saying is Its just interesting to watch people gauge the playability and then be like I can’t and move on. 🤷🏻‍♂️
