2021 USGA Girls' Junior

Recommended Posts

Supposedly 4 girls from BC played including:

1) The youngest girl to participate, 12 year old Anna Huang

2) Lauren Kim....lost in a playoff to advance.

In 2019, she won a local event here....when chatting with a local program coach/mentor.

I thought Lauren was 16 or 18...he replied 13...WTH.

The junior boys were playing too....I saw some hitting 6 & 7 irons on a 210 yard par 3....WTF.

On the same course, at a USGA US Am men's qualifier. On the 8th hole most 'normal' golfers layup about 200-220 yards off the tee before a creek.

The big hitters were going for the green in one....372 yards away...though really only plays 340-350 as the crow flies.

I don't know if there's a USGA website issue or a rain delay...no scoring updates on the Rd of 32 today.

Our girl Rose is cold blooded. Just dispatching girls.

Bummed to see Pano go out. Wish we could be watching these matches...

I was bummed that Rose and Amari met in the last round.  They're both locals and would have loved to see them both move on further in the event.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Rose sailed through the quarter finals. She's down one early in the semis.

Really stinks that this isn't on TV. Ain't paying for Peacock. Way too many streaming services with too little content worth watching.

You can watch for free on Peacock.  It's not part of the paid programming.

I read that Rose had a member on her bag today and beat Nguyen 6 & 4.

Rose has a member on the bag for the week.  He's a former D1 golfer and recent club champ.  Many of the girls who made match play have members, juniors and caddies from the club on their bags.  Local knowledge is pretty valuable at this venue.  Very tricky poa annua greens.  There has been a lot of impressive play, Rose in particular.

Pano missed a short putt on 18 yesterday afternoon that would have extended the match.  I felt bad for her.  She was working hard on the range and practice green after her earlier matches which was impressive considering how hot it is and how many rounds they play in a short period.

14 year old Yana Wilson is really impressive.  She had a tough stretch against Rose this morning after playing some impressive golf on Thursday.  She made 4 birdies on the back 9 of her morning match yesterday including a bird on 18 to win against Kelly Xu.  Kelly was very impressive as well with 3 back 9 birdies.  That was a high quality match.

Lydia Ko won the 2012 & 2013 CWO and 2014 Swinging Skirts with a club member on her bag.

I watched Yealimi Noh win the 2018 Cdn Women's Am...she was offered a choice of 2 members to loop for her...a young or older member...she declined.....IMO she could have won by more shots with local course knowledge.

I can't believe Zhang didn't use an Augusta loop this year....at the ANWA.

Rose is awesome.  Haven't seen any video - looking forward to watching the final.  Glad she has an experienced caddie.  Not having one may have really hurt at ANWA (I think she wins if she used a local looper).

Rose is also quite humble.  Refreshing to see her comportment on the course.

5 of the final 8 in this tournament had club members or club caddies on the bag including the 2 finalists. It’s really beneficial for the players to get a second set of eyes on the greens that know the nuances. The girls are very self sufficient but getting feedback from a someone with 100+ rounds on the course is a big benefit.

Two great semi matches today.

Two great final putts by Davis and Zhang.

I thought Miranda might had been the Giant Slayer at the end.

High quality play today. Davis made a tough putt to close it on 18. Difficult to see on TV, but she her putt starts on a ridge and the slightest miss sends it several feet off line left or right. Miranda played a great match. Rose is just so solid. She missed in the right spot on 17 and Miranda didn’t. Getting up and down to that back pin from the front bunker is very difficult.

Rose is a great player, obviously. She’s very poised and carries herself well on the course. I walked and talked with her family briefly this week and they are really nice people. Overall, I was really impressed with how all of the girls I saw represented  themselves; composed, good body language, positive attitudes.

I first saw Rose several years ago.  I was hitting on the range and she took the space next to me.  She was around 11 years old, I guess.  I was blown away by her swing, her routine and her attitude.  She was by herself - no parents, no coaches.  Very diligent and organized.  I’ve seen her at the range a lot, and always just her - no coach/parents/entourage hovering around.

I went home and told family and friends I had seen the most incredible young girl at the range.  Her swing then was very similar to now.  So was her demeanor.  Been following her ever since.  The guys at the course speak highly of her as a person as well as a golfer.

I think she will be a successful golfer and more importantly, a successful human.

I assume you belong to the same golf club as Rose?

Glad she doesn't have obsessive parents who hover over her every move.

Did you hear this BJ?🤣

When I see her on the range, she doesn’t even have all the fancy stuff.  She has an old stand bag that she carries out to the range. No staff bag, nor doodads - maybe has alignment sticks.  Last couple years she’s had a trackman but seems to not use it every time.  Once, a few months ago, I saw her walk to the hitting spot with an adult and a bag like she uses in tourneys.  But only that once (and I don’t think the adult stood by her while she hit).

Seems like an old soul in a teenager’s body.
