Which Color Golf Ball Is The Worst To Play?

Recommended Posts

I have seen many golf ball colors, and some are harder to watch the flight than other.  To me, the best color is white, as I have the best lucking finding that one as it flies.  Yellow is not bad, but some other colors I cannot see fly.  Of course, dark green would be the hardest to find, but who makes them anyway?  Just today I was playing with a lady who used purple balls, and they were hard to spot.  Bright red I also have trouble seeing, and I also saw a glossed black ball from Ping.  Which color ball is the worst for you?

I've only tried the TM yellow (soft yellow), and one time I bought a sleeve of the matte red volviks, man I couldn't even look at that red ball on the tee it tripped me out. But I find the white easier to track in the air and find in the grass over the yellows.

I'm with you on the red, it does something to my eyes and I just cant even look at it. Almost like it hurts.

I cannot pick up the red ones in flight at all, it's weird.

I was just told red was the best ...

I went to yellow full time this year, and they're better than white, but I'm still struggling to pick them up off the club face.

Blue is the worst to see, and I easily track golf balls in flight.

I like yellow balls just because I'm a nonconformist and played them exclusively for several years.  They are actually a bit harder to spot depending on light/shadow, especially when I was living in Puerto Rico and the sunlight would shine across the Bermuda turf.  I recently switched to Taylormade Pix balls because I really like the pattern.  Helps me see the spin/roll of the ball around and on the greens and I'm not a fan of Callaway balls so the Truvis isn't for me.

Red is indeed a mystery.  Even a bright red ball is hard to see when the ball is in flight.  Conceptually, you think that because it is a bright color you should be able to see it fly, but on a golf course it is very difficult for us to see the flight of the ball.  Maybe a lot of us have red-green color blindness?

Blue I can easily understand: the sky is blue, so the blue ball blends with the sky and you lose the ball's initial vector, so your eyes cannot anticipate where it is headed to before they focus on the next region.

I think that the colors that are hard to spot are the earth-tone colors, or any other color that occurs naturally.

I suppose for now, blue and red are the worst.

Depends on the background.

Blue sky - white or yellow are fine.

Overcast - most yellows are pretty good

Grass - orange and pink are good. Yellow can be nearly impossible if the grass sheen and sun aren't cooperating.

Leafy fall - again, orange or pink.

The patterned balls (Callway soccer balls, TM's pixel) are actually harder to spot at a distance. The pattern breaks up the overall contrast.

White is at least useable in most conditions. Not the best for all, but generally useable. Plus has the widest selection, of course.
