Tony Finau putter switch… (** NO POLITICS **)

I am surprised it took him this long to make the switch. Hopefully it makes him better on the weekend. As for Piretti, you won't see me ever spend a cent on his products.

please don’t take that as a jab. Or me even defending them. I don’t know the owner personally.  At all. But I do usually disagree with folks expectations at the retail level.  People who produce things like this work on tiny margins. To give you all you wanted the putter probably needed to go up in price 30 % at least to stay in the black. Time is $. But again.  No excuse fo being late with no call , That id walk over. So no qualms there.

Just some more perspective...  I forgot to mention, the first red flag was them returning my call about a fitting 4 MONTHS after I left a voicemail, I ignorantly still scheduled it 🤣 The fitting was advertised and agreed upon before I drove 3 hours to get fit. I totally agree, I expected SAM and/or Trackman, instead, it was a tiny (15X10?) artificial green in the back of a random airplane hangar at a private airport in Houston. I disagree that fittings are for people who do not know what they need, but can also be for someone who wants to fine tune their equipment at a tour level (like Artisan or Bettinardi).

 

There were many high-level amateurs, now professionals, that had the same experience as me. Piretti definitely left a bitter taste in my mouth.

They are no longer at the airport, and have a nice shop-a candy store of awesome stuff.  Bill has helped me quite a bit with a perfect fit on 2 of the new midnight 303 models, a Forza and a Cuvio, and has been awesome to work with.  Just my experience-have a great day-steve

***no politics*** some of the nicest guys you’ll meet there at Piretti. They like to have fun online and don’t take themselves too seriously. Never had any issues with fittings, orders, response time, etc. They put out a great product and know their customer base.

Won't matter what putter finau uses. Until he finds a way to take his hands out of the stroke, he'll struggle.

Has any other Ping staffer ever gone this long with out gaming a Ping putter? Feel like he has the be the only one considering the end of Nike switch to something else and then get signed while still in a Piretti deal?

I like Finau but he was atrocious with that Piretti. Not sure what his head weight was on his but Pirettis make a ton of heavy heads. Finau should go to a super MOI mallet.

The ones I've heard are pretty quiet for shallow milling, but that's bc they were carbon steel. The 303 should sound clickier.

I believe June 24th podcast of Golf Fully Equipped they go over the putter and why it's spec'd the way it is.

Hard to say now, looking at his stats he switched around The Open to this putter, there are no SG Putting stats from The Open but at the 3M his was +1.329, St. Jude -0.035 and nothing yet from Northern Trust. 

 

With his old putter his best SG was +1.363 from the US Open where he MC, and had 4 tournaments with -1.1 or worse but seemed to hover around +/-0.5 stroke. 

 

Could this putter be a turning point for Tony? Is it just a different look until he's back with the Piretti? Who knows will see, I hope this putter gets him a win or two, I like Tony and don't want to see him as a "What if" kinda player.

Tony's Putting SG from Northern Trust a +0.997 so the putter is working but I wouldn't say that was his winning reason. He did hit 80.56% on GIR and hit 78.57% of fairways which were his best on the year and probably played the biggest factor in the win.

 

But if he has confidence in this putter and even if just temp these next few weeks are the best time to be hot with the amount of money to be won.

Looks like he is much more confident in that 6-10 foot range. He knocked in some big putts on the back 9 with plenty of speed, which was a definite issue before when he was in contention. Love seeing him get the win, hopefully the flood gates have opened for him!

Putts were good and he was centre of fairway in last drive vs opponent who was out of bounds! Nice Putter.

Is his putter counterbalanced in anyway? Just with how long it is and how much he is gripping down on it. Either way good to see TF with some confidence with the putter.

I think you are really short selling how well Tony putted for the most part all week at the NT. He was 16th in strokes gained putting in the event while losing 2.4 shots strokes gained putting in the 3rd round when he shot 68.

 

In rounds 1,2 and 4 his strokes gained putting were 1.393, 2.738 and 2.338 against the field. While his ball striking was great he also made a ton of putts that greatly contributed to his win. Especially his par putt on 18 in the final round.
