Modus 120 question

Hi all - want to know if anyone has recommendations on some shafts to try…. I’m currently playing modus 120 stiff and really like the feel, weight, and generally most things about the shaft but I’m getting killed into the wind. The ball starts high and stays high. Fwiw I have them in an apex 21 combo set. The pro heads do a little better with this as they launch lower but overall it’s an issue.

I know the modus 120 have a unique profile, but want to know if anyone has liked this shaft but gotten along with something else at a similar weight and lower launch.

Thanks in advance!

I currently have Modus Tour 120’s in my 785’s and they are definitely a little high launch and high spin for me also.

The shafts I had previously that I really liked that were lower launch and lower spin were Project X 6.0. Got fit in March, and was fitted for Project X LS, or KBS Tour 120 which felt really good in the fitting, but had issues with a Srixon ZX5 order and ended up w/ the Modus 120’s which were the 3rd choice from my fitter.

Callaway Paradym X (11*) / Hzrdus Silver 6.0

Callaway Paradym X (15*) / Hzrdus Silver 6.0

Callaway Big Bertha 23 (19*) / Cally RCH 65 S

Srixon ZX5 (4-PW) / Nippon Modus3 Tour 105 S

Cleveland CBX (48*), RTX 6 Zipcore (52* Mid, 58* Mid) / DG Spinner

Odyssey White Hot OG 7 S

I'm in the same boat, but don't feel the need to change. These shafts allow me to stick any green -- even down to 5 iron -- with almost no rollout, which I love. I am able to flight them down a bit when I need to, although they are still pretty high launch and slightly higher spin regardless.

If I were to switch, I would probably go with a Project X 6.0 or 6.5. I played the 6.0 in a previous set of irons and felt like the trajectory was much lower, albeit not nearly as nice feeling.

@JamesG12 If your contact is good and you get your desired ball flight consistenly I would look at golf ball, loft, head before you look at shaft. However, if you are saying your contact is inconsistent, then look at the shaft to help change your strike.

thanks for that feedback. I think you’re on to something. I am going to try the zx7 heads since the modus 120 are stock. Those heads are lower lofted and I think should help with the issues I’m looking at. Already using left dash 1x balls so I don’t think that’s the problem.

@JamesG12 No worries!

Left Dash is a good ball for sure. However, it will still launch higher than prov1.

For any face that flexes like an apex, you will notice the initial launch will always be higher. That's why the apex launch high even at their lower lofts. So avoiding irons with that feature would be smart.

If you like those apex pros (which have less of that flexible face than apex), ZX7 is a great choice. Similar offset, similar cg locations, similar blade length, but no club face-like technologies that are present in apex pros.

I'd expect lower launch angles with Zx7 when compared to the apex pros

Thanks - very helpful! I do really like the apex pro heads.

Trying to tweak launch and spin with shaft changes can be unpredictable at best.   Before resorting to that you might want to try playing around with adding some head weight.  Get some lead tape, go to the range,  and add it in small (1-2 gm) increments and see what happens to the ball flight.  That might possibly slow down the release a little and reduce the dynamic loft (gain a bit more forward shaft lean).  And if it doesn't work, or you just don't like the feel, it's easy to remove the lead tape.   If it makes it worse, then there's a good chance that the softer profile butt/mid stiffness of the nippons might be causing the problem and it might be worth it to try a stiffer offering (e.g.  go up to xstiff).

Then there is always the option of tweaking the lofts a little stronger.  Based on the amount it sounds like you're delofting the clubs, I wouldn't expect that to be a fix - but it can help a little.

I have played the PX LZ all season in 5.5, and think that may be a good option.  I just did a Titliest fitting and they only had PX LZ in 6.0 and after two separate sessions I was about to decide on the 5.5 flex again, but the fitter had me a try the Modus 120 in stiff based on the mizuno swing optimizer recommending it.  After 5 swings I was sold on the modus, same smooth kick that the PX LZ 5.5 gave me but with crisper feel.  The shots were super consistent, and mishits didnt punish me as much.  I didnt expect such a difference in PX LZ 5.5 to 6.0 but the stiffer flex just made work harder and generally get less good results.  The modus 120 seems like a similar shaft with a litte more weight than 5.5 and just as smooth.

Have you considered using the same shaft model in a stiffer flex, X flex.
