Rory "not patriotic"??

Rory not looking forward to Olympics

 

Man, it seems as if Rory is in a real bad spot mentally with his game.....his new coaching staff is NOT working out as planned.....he still cannot putt and is spraying his driver all over the course and his wedge game, once his go to shot, has disappeared.  7 years without a major???

 

now he says he is not looking forward to the Olympics and he is not patriotic.....the once prodigal son of Ireland is struggling in all aspect of golf......

He has won 5 times since 2019 including a Players, Tour championship and a 2021 win at Wells Fargo ranked 15 in the world, that's average? ...That's Rickie Fowlers entire career in two years.  When he is in Rickies boat then we can use average

Im not comparing him to Rickie Fowler.....lol......eveyone knows he is average at best......im comparing Rory to Rory...... sure he won on the Euro tour (big deal? not so much) and his players win was great.....but for Rory, he has really regressed. He is still my favorite player but he is throwing clubs again, making silly comments and spraying the ball all over gods creation...

He's saying he's unpatriotic because he doesn't feel super connected to  Ireland or the United Kingdom of GB & NI. Even if he said he did, it would blow up in his face and people who are loyalists in NI would give him abuse for it. Same thing happened when he initially said he'd play for GB in the Olympics, all the Irish people gave him abuse for it. He cant win either way, its pretty easy to see why he wouldn't be the first one waving the tri color if he wins. His background is far more complex than you can imagine.

Yes, it is a weird thing for him to say.  I see Rory as a pretty apathetic guy though, so not too shocking.

He needs to stop all this zen crap , quit fighting his natural shape , and ditch that dang spider putter.  And just go out pissed off and play.  He’s looks like a guy who doesn’t know how to be angry.  Like whne he’s mad he says “ fiddlesticks “ or “ sassafras “.    Until he craves the taste of blood it won’t change.  It’s all bandaids covering mortal wounds.  His old caddie was correct. “ you’re effing Rory mcclroy “ all else is just excuses.  He fired the guy for telling the truth , and placing the blame where it belongs.

First, is his level of patriotism something that should be judged? He's from Northern Ireland. Patriotism has a different meaning and context in Northern Ireland than patriotism has in the United States.  The Troubles still resonate. Reportedly, one of his family members was murdered during that time period. 

The other part of this thread focuses on him being average. He's only 32 years old but he's already been a pro going on 14 years. There are ebbs and flows in every career. He's probably got a few more victories in him including one or two majors. Give him a break. He's pretty darn good.

Who knows what he exactly meant by "patriotic", a few above seem to have it figured out - it's complicated.

 

As for the golf, like a lot of other great young players . . . he's not Tiger.  His talent is unreal and he'll figure things out and likely have more success moving forward than 90% of those who have ever played the Tour.

Priorities tend to change once you get married and have children.  Its a guarantee that he doesn't practice as much, workout as much, or play as often.

 

These guys aren't playing for fun.  This is their living.  Its work to them.  The schedules that these guys have to keep and the amount of practice/play that is needed just to stay competitive (let alone be good enough to win) are astronomical.   With young children now in the mix, its only natural that he has become more inconsistent.

 

That being said, the guy just won on the PGA Tour 2 months ago.  I think we're setting the expectations bar plenty high for what is successful for a pro golfer in today's Tour, which is as good and deep as it has ever been.

It's called managing expectations ... why put all that pressure on yourself of telling the world "this is the biggest thing in the world to me - I HAVE to win a medal!" That's just setting yourself up for failure.

 

No matter what your internal expectations are, lowball it. Eh, no big deal. Tell yourself life goes on, win or lose. The sun comes up tomorrow no matter what. Otherwise, you're just putting extra weight on your shoulders.

Rory is from NI so is British, but according to the qualifying rules for an Irish passport, he is also Irish. That's the problem - if he plays for GBR he gets flak from IRL and vice versa. It's a no-win situation so best to be a-political and ignore the Olympics. Who wants to go to a place that's in lockdown anyway?

So you didn't read the article? Nobody is judging his patriotism ... he's the one that said he's not patriotic.

Rory lives mostly in the USA and married a US girl.  I don't think the participation, or lack there of, in the Olympics  is much about patriotism.

I still say Rory got lazy toward golf because he has a ton of money and has other things he likes better, but is struggling to come to terms with it.

Rory has been pretty clear in the past why he doesnt love the Olympics.

IMO Rory needs to step away from reading the self help books, they have just cluttered his golfing mind, they might have done wonders for his personal life and self awareness, but if you listen to his pressers, he is always talking like someone who has just been thru a therapy session with a shrink...the over analyzing over his golf swing and the mechanics and what he is working on has got him so tied up...maybe he needs to see a sports psychologist to free him up from all the other psycho babble, because when he plays pure golf he come real close to being unbeatable

Lol. Right !  This is why I love Rahm or JT or even Reed.  A guy who won’t cuss himself out isn’t trying hard enough.  I’ll admit.  The sassafras part I stole from someone. But I can’t remember who it was.  A comedian.  Maybe Carlin ? Who knows.  
 

 

 

wanted to add - im pro Rory.  Im a fan.  So don’t take my opinion as bias hate.  It’s actually me wanting to see him play mad and determined.  His A + isn’t beatable by anyone save possibly DJ or Brooks. And I don’t know if Brooks’ A + survived the surgeries.

There are a lot of people that like Rory, but I am not one of them.  My dislike began years back when Tiger influenced him to dump his manager to switch to Tiger's mgt company, and it resulted in Rory's breaking an implied contract and big court battle.  Never followed it to see how it settled but haven't bothered with Rory since. 

 

So, what he said in that interview and another interview is sad but not surprising.  Rory is all about Rory, and I don't think there's much to him.

he shouldn't be playing in them ... the current state of 'things' in japan/the rest of the world makes going over there nothing but a headache for someone who already has a valid reason for not wanting to represent a country ... but, he's a good dude and is indeed doing the right thing ... and his golf game sucks at the moment, which is not the best of reasons to avoid competition, but certainly adds another reason here ...

Fair point. He was asked if going during covid is a test of his patriotism. And, as you point out, it’s not as straight forward a question for him as for some. 
 

Patriotism could open up a whole can of worms that could even digress into religion.

 

He comes across like he’d rather not even go,

 

"I am doing it because I think it is the right thing to do.”

 

Kinda like getting your teeth cleaned ; )
