Need advices on my upcoming match play against senior opponent

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am going to play against 62 yrs old man who plays from the silver tee. I will be playing from the white tee.

The main question I have is...

1. Do I have to tee off first on every hole no matter what the outcome of the previous hole?

2. The reason I ask is I would like to have option to tee off seeing his tee shot and decide on the club I am going to hit.

Thanks

Nowhere in the rules of golf does it mention WHICH tees. Just order of play. Match play as a format makes order of play very important. Maintain it. Ask the opposite - order of play is specifically called out for match play. Ask him to show you the exception for different tees ...

I'd be arguing that the match should be off the same tees. How common is it to play matches off different tees that isn't a mixed event? Personally I'd rather play against a woman (I am a man) off the same tee if and have the corresponding handicap adjustment.

There are nuances to match play that get removed by mixed tees. Sometimes you want to be just ahead of your opponent in the fairway, so that hitting their second shot they know they have more club in... Or sometimes the opposite, hitting a little less off the tee confident that you'll hit your longer approach in and put pressure on their second.

All of which is nullified if your opponent starts 30m ahead.

Our club allows this for certain club-wide match play events that aren't flighted. We have a number of forced carries that if the less-skilled players had to play from the longer tees, they would have a miserable day. The more-skilled players aren't interested in playing from very short tees. This makes for a compromise so all can play (with handicaps adjusted appropriately). Without it, either the better players or the not-better players would basically skip the event ....

My club does a season long match play event, and when you register you get to choose what tees you want to play from. It's part of the fun and strategy of it because your handicap / stroke allowance will vary depending on your tee choice.

I still think the tee for the event should be selected by the committee rather than leaving it to the players. My home course has five tees and my handicap ranges from zero to ten. I just don't think you are playing the same course if you're off different tees. I think personally I'd select the shortest tees and give plenty of strokes if they chose the shortest tees.

As an example off the shortest tees all the par fives would be driver and an iron. Off the longest I'd be hitting long irons or even woods in for three.

So it would really depend where the strokes fell.

This is very important information for me.

Our club is senior player friendly. They hit too far for their age and tees for silver and greens are too close to the greens.

One previous match, I was outdriven by a 63 yrs old 401 yards on 7 holes on front 9 holes.....

Is this a net event or gross?
