Ryder Cup - Do we even have a chance?

Top 6 as of now:

1. Morikawa

2. DJ

3. Bryson "The Scientist" DeChambeau

4. Brooksy

5. JT

6. Xander

Curious to gain everyone's opinions:

With the drama between BK / BC going on, as well as the fact that P-Reed will likely be a Captain's pick, do you think the US team can put differences aside and win, especially with Whistling Straits being a links style course?

Also: six captains picks. Spieth is probably automatic along with P-Reed. That leaves four:

Do you take Harris English who is currently #9? That would be a hard pass for me.

Think Stricker takes Phil?

Is Will Zalatoris a solid sleeper pick at #20 with as consistently as he's played this year, given his showing in a few big tournaments?

The Ryder Cup is a total toss up each year so we have as much of a chance of wining as the Europeans do.

I mean I doubt anyone thought Europe had a chance of winning in '02 considering 50% of their team wasn't even in the Top 50 OWGR and they had multiple players outside of the Top 100.

Yet they still won...

Great point, but I'm speaking more on the fact that the US team seems to be more focused on the fact of a select few not getting along.

Talent wise, I think we have a major edge.

Comradery wise, I think we are screwed.

I’m betting Reed will not be a pick.

How could you not take Phil?  He’s this years PGA Champ.

Edited by BrianMcG

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Lot to unpack here.

I think you are correct with your P. Reed and YJS point.  Zalatoris is a strong pick too.

I'll take Kevin Na, Phil and Tony Finau to round it out.  You got that like 8-25 pack where whoever is playing well could get in there.  No matter what it will get scrutinized both ways cause that is what we (media too) do.

^This.  I think comradery is overblown.  These are pro golfers.  If you show up and do you, even in the team format, you do well.  If you don't execute you lose.

That being said, I do think you keep BDC and Brooks not paired up.  A) You don't need to add drama when there will be plenty of pundits asking Strick about it anyway, B) I don't think their games compliment each other's well.

I think Reed will be on the team.  I would pass on Phil. I like him, but he has been to inconsistent and I may be wrong about this, but his record isn’t great.  Stricker needs to make the right choices for the first 2 days, just don’t put guys together because of their name, get the right partners, or Europe will have the advantage.

I always think this camaraderie element is blown way out of proportion

I kinda think about even local club events like mens league or member member/member guest. I love my team almost every time (I picked them after-all) but it does little to our results if we cant hit shots and perform on the course. Similarly there are guys on my squad I have no idea who they are does that mean they should perform worse than the guys I know and like?

Does having a team you like make a difference to a bunch of hyper competitive guys who are wired to want to win regardless of the situation...

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the main reason the a given team looses is staying up too late playing high stakes ping pong because it compensates them better for their time.

I've always said, European "camaraderie" is a mile wide and an inch deep. The moment they start messing up, the knives come out, the anonymous stories are planted, the tell-all books are written. In any case, it's the Ryder Cup...who cares.

The disparity between the two sides must be the greatest it has been for a long time (world ranking wise).

I don’t look at records from past Cups, match play is just so random. Phil was cruising against Rose who started making putts from everywhere and turned it around comes to mind. The question is are there an inexperienced player who would benefit from Phil’s experience .

Is there anyone who is friends with Bryson and or Brooks who would be a good partner for them?

Phil was more of a flash in the pan than anything this year. T-62 at the US Open, cut at the Open. I don’t think Phil makes it.

Patrick, love him or hate him, will be there.

Europeans just appear to want it more every time they play in the Ryder Cup. U.S. always looks crazy on paper but that’s them playing their own ball, Europeans usually have some guys with less than impressive individual stats but get with the team and feel comfortable. Idk thats my take! Go USA!

No doubt, the EU is just better at team golf than we are. Not sure what their secret is, but only time I ever saw our team have that chemistry was when Zinger was captain at Valhalla. And of course, he was never captain again.

With Brooks and Bryson on the team, I might become European for a week.

You can add Reed to that list too as far as I’m concerned.

I would guess more people would want to play with Brooks, I really could see Bryson only playing a singles match.

The only thing Phil should be at this years RC is an assistant captain riding around in a golf cart. Despite how great his win was at Kiawah it was a fluke based upon on his recent play. Some people must not really realize how poor Phil has played over the last couple of years. Brutal. Easy information to find. In no way at this time does he deserve a captains pick. There was a very good reason why earlier this year Phil dropped outside of the OWGR top 100. He earned it. His current OWGR ranking is way over stated due the win at the PGA Championship.

I hope Stricker doesn't pick him if his play doesn't change. After all Stricker is a savage.
