Looking for a new putter

Hi, I'm a 20 handicap and fairly new to the game.

I love the feel of my Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2, but I do struggle with occasional mis-hits because of unnecessary wrist movements. I also have a Ping Floki,  but I really don't like the feel of the solid, machined face anymore--gives me lots of trouble with distance. My coach has seen me putt with both and thinks a mallet would be better for me.  Any suggestions on what would be good to try?

Maybe a Squareback 2 or Flowback 5.5? Or one of the Phantom X putters (I like the 5.5 which gives that blade-type feel)? I hear a lot about Evnroll (ER/V series) and Bettinardi (Queen B?). Only problem is that I have nowhere to try out the Evnroll or Bettinardi. I've tried the TM Spider and didn't like it. Other putters I can probably find to try are the Odyssey 2-Ball Ten and the new Ping 2021 putters, too. Thanks!

Driver: TaylorMade SIM Max 10.5
5w: TaylorMade SIM Max - 18
3H: Ping G425 - at 20.5
Irons: Ping G425 (5i-UW)
Wedges: Ping Glide 3.0 (52, 56, 60)
Putter: Odyssey 2-ball ten tour lined S
Ball: Titleist Pro V1
Tracking: Arccos

I've been gaming an Odyssey 2-ball ten tour lined S and it's been great for the most part. Have the hardest time with short putts (inside 6 feet) but that's probably due to lack of practice not the putter. The 2-ball eleven tour lined s looks nice but it actually has even more toe hang (40 deg compared to 30 deg), which I don't want.

I still miss the feel of a milled face so I'm thinking about trying the PXG battle ready bat attack with a heel shafted or plumber's neck hosel (I have some arc to my stroke). Also curious about the Scotty Flowback 5.5 (or a Phantom X 5.5 or 9.5). Probably go with the PXG since there's a nice return policy but I've been looking at the Scotties for a long time now.

Also tried out the L.A.B. DF 2.1 and hated it. Tried a Mezz1 as well but didn't like the feel off the face at all.

You're going to get a million different answers, if you're going to spend $400 on a premium offering you might as well spend a little more and get fitted.

I was afraid someone might say that. Only problem is that there isn't any fitting place nearby that has a good stock of a wide variety of putters. I guess I can travel somewhere for it. Any recommendations for a good place for putter fitting in California that stocks the widest variety of putters?

I'm a putter whore like most of the degenerates on this site. LOL.

I recently got a LAB Golf Mezz. I did the online fitting. After a few weeks of practicing and figuring it out, I'm putting better than ever. I just put up my Cameron '22 Phantom on BST and I ordered a Mezz Max Armlock as well as a LAB Golf DF.

LAB Golf is legit.

The LAB Golf putters might be hard to look at for some but it will get better looking the more putts you make.

I'm from the east coast so no. I just checked your signature and honestly if you already have a 2-ball ten then you have a nicer putter than 95% of the golfing public. I'd say have someone check the length to make sure you can get in the right posture. But more so than that...go find a practice green and start practicing.

I think that's all I needed to hear. My coach likes the length. Yeah, I just need to practice more. Thanks!!!

I just had a terrible time with distance control with the Mezz and especially the DF. Also hard to get passed the looks. I bet I could get used to the Mezz, but I like the feel of my 2-ball ten right now and will stick with it.

Imo its worth a 1 or 2 hour drive to do a putter fitting. Dump the Scotty. Use that $400 to get fit + buy a new putter that fits. Then practice.  Unless you must use the scotty, nobody, 1 or 20 hcp needs a Scotty if it's not a good fit.

I mean...even if it is a good fit...a $100 cleveland will do the same for you.

No, no. Coach is happy with my current putter. Decided to not change it up after all. Will just practice more!

Normally mallet style putter have a higher MOI (more forgiving) vs the blade style putters, maybe get a used Odyssey mallet Two Ball, Rossie, V-Line, etc and give it a try, possibly cheaper than a putter fitting, that said, putter fittings are greatly beneficial, take care.

What city are you in?

I’m firmly in the camp that a Newport 2 is one of the finest putters available.  I’ve tried everything from Bullseye to Spider and I don’t think you need to switch.  You should ensure that your current gamer fits you with length and lie at a minimum though.  There is a great guy in my area who will do that for minimal outlay.  Dave Stockton’s book on putting is a great read as well.  Good luck
