What if equipment development had stopped to April 1997?

Tour Pros would still be playing mostly with blade irons, steel shafted metal woods and balata balls. Pro V1 ball wouldn’t have ever been introduced, no oversized NASA wind tunnel designed drivers heads with 100+ custom after market graphite shaft options either. No era of anchor putters, no single length irons for Bryson, etc. Utility irons and hybrids would be noin existent.

How many more tournaments and majors more would have Tiger won? Would we still have seen the likes of Rory and Koepka bagging few majors each? Would DJ have developed a different approach to game? No success in Majors for 50+ guys, sorry Watson and Phil…or yes? Which players would have benefitted the most and for whom the lack of modern technology would have been disastrous?

Tommy Armour EQL irons released in 1989. 1iron Golf was founded in 1997. A lot of people think the single length concept is new but it has been around for a long time. In addition there has been several other companies that has or are still producing single length clubs. Bryson would have options.

I was in my mid 20s, belonged to a low end private club.  Played golf pretty much everyday it didn't rain or snow.  Don't remember much, if any, talk about equipment except putters.  I paid $250 for a used set of FG17s and was given a hand-me-down set of Hogan laminated Speed Slots that were replaced by Pittsburgh persimmons and alternated between an Anser and 8802.  Life was good.  I played Surlyn (usually Dunlop Blue Dots) back then because I couldn't control balata side to side and they balooned on me.  Although, I didn't know that term back then.

Tiger would have 25-30 majors , the equipment evolution  brought more guys closer to him.

I disagree, Tiger's edge was mostly mental, the equipment has probably helped him as he has aged, no way he wins in 2019 with old equipment.  All of life's temptations would still be there and no one ever really took a major from Tiger, except for YE Yang, I say his totals would be very similar.  After 2008 when he quit winning it had EVERYTHING to do with his physical health and whatever lingering affects the Turkey Day scandal and his personal life were going through.

TW would have 30 majors, probably 2-3 Tiger Slams, maybe 1 GS. The only way those guys were able to keep up with TW is their 100-person strong engineering departments coming up with the latest and greatest gear that let them have a chance despite being amateur pros next to the great one.

Edit: And if you don't believe me, go take a look at YE Yang's famous hybrid shot on 18. The guy can't even hit a long iron, he loses the tournament if there's less than $10 million in R&D behind that club to enable a jobber to beat the greatest golfer ever to swing a club. And that's just one shot, one hole. It was like when IBM spent millions of engineering hours and billions of dollars building a supercomputer to beat Kasparov by one game. Good job nerds.

I love your passion, loyalty and single-minded focus my man.  (I'm not being sarcastic)

Pro's can hit anything.  The best with modern tech would still be the best with old school tech.

Me?  I can mis-hit anything.  And my bag hasn't changed much since the early '90's.  It's changed a lot, but somehow I keep going back to what works best.

tw_f, forgive me for saying so but you can be prone to hyperbole

However

This is *not one of those times.

The 99-2000 domination would have continued uninterrupted by composite toaster heads and graphite magic wands.

Manly game of Steel! That’s what TW ruled!

The moderators are reviewing my reply (used a word that isn't allowed, unbeknownst to me, my fault).  But aside from a few outliers I truly do really like 80's music in general.  Dig a lot of the 70's stuff too though, you won't get a strong argument from me there.

What if Buddy Allin was transported from 1975 to Scotland in 1865 with his same equipment? None of those Morris chops would have been heard from, Willie Park would have designed tartan pants. Patton and a division at the Little Big Horn with the Sioux, Herman’s Hermits playing for Henry VIII.

I liked this post just for the Buddy Allin reference...

For me 1997 is a good line in the sand due to the smaller driver heads, less efficient balls, less efficient graphite shafts, and the fact the even high end golf had a fear factor which technology now has mostly erased.  In ‘96 Norman and Faldo had the great decision to make in the 13th fairway at AGNC on their second shots. Now that shot is almost an afterthought unless your are in the needles.

Tiger hit the ball in the middle of the face with his irons more than anyone so any tech that helped the iron misses hurt his advantage.  The better graphite shafts and forgiving heads also hurt his advantage. He was slow to embrace a lot of tech with the exception of the ball. And we all witnessed what he did with a better ball. 7 majors in 11 at one time I think.
So without the tech I would say he breaks Jack’s major record, has the most tour wins etc. but remember Jack had to play the crappy Mac Gregor ball . Gary Player said Jack would have 25 majors if he could have played a better ball.
