Handicap on each part of your game

sekrah

Recommended Posts

The weakness thread got me thinking... Using the handicap system how would you describe each part of your game?

Putting 20.

Have seen improvement recently, but from history I know it'll go awry again.  Putting is a battle for me, especially the knee knockers to save par.

Sand 20.

Up and down battle with me, bladed shots sneak up and get me in here.

Fairway Woods/Long Irons 15.

Could be so much better here with my longer clubs.

Irons 10.

Ball striking is mostly decent on my short-mid irons, tops and chunks are kept to a minimum mostly, I just fight pulls and pushes throughout the round.

Driver 8.

~240 off the tee, >50% fairways. Misses are very rarely god-awful unplayable or OB.

Chipping/Pitching 4.

Anywhere within 30 yards on green grass I feel very confident I can knock it within 6 feet and give myself a chance for an up-and-down.  Have holed out for birdie a few times this year.  Land it high and soft on the fringe short-side over a bunker?  No sweat!

Sound about right for a 13 HCP?  I know if I could consistently become an average putter and tighten up the fairway woods I would finally break 80.

Arccos makes this easy for me.

My GHIN index is 22.4. Arccos has rounds that cannot be posted to GHIN, so I'm not going to use what it says my index should be.

Arccos says my last 10 rounds have the following breakdown:

I drive, any non par 3 tee shot, like a 25.4

My approach shots, par 3 tee shots, and all non tee shots from outside 50 yards, 27.2

Short game, all non putts inside 50 yards and in, 10.6

Putting, 15.1

Hard for me to give actual numbers here.

My index ranges from 12-14

Driver - High index for control, low index for distance

Fairway Woods - Low index

Long irons - single

Mid irons - single

Short irons - Mid

Pitching - Mid? I get them on the green

Chipping - Mid? Can usually chip to 10' or less, I've holed out a handful this season.  And everyone once in a while I get the chili dip

Sand - Super high index

Putting - 34 putts/round average.  No idea where that puts me, but I guess mid.

In the bag

Driver: Taylormade Sim2 Max 9*

4w: Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero

Hybrid:  Apex 19 3h 20*

Hybrid:  Apex 19 4h 23*

Irons: Callaway Apex CF 19 5i-AW

W1: Vokey SM7 54* S

W2: Vokey SM8 60* L

Putter: Swag Handsome Too

Putting-scratch or better, rarely more than 30 putts per round

sand- 5ish, never any difficulty (knocks on wood)

chipping/pitching- about an 8, sometimes struggle with distance control especially uphill

short irons-5ish, maybe one gets away from me per round but mostly hit the green even if not as close as I’d like with generally good distance control

mid irons-same as short irons

long irons-⬆️ With a little bit less distance control
hybrids- about a 10, not too bad here but not great either

driver-🤬 box of chocolates, never know what I’m going to get. Some days I’ll hit 10-12 fairways and score great. For the last two weeks this has abandoned me. 2-4 fairways per round 1-2 lost balls two-way miss no clue how to fix it. This really kills my rounds some days. Because I’ll lose distance too. It almost feels like I’ve never held a club at times. Then it comes back and I feel like I hit everything where I’m aiming. Very strange.

Making birdies on longer par 5's and avoiding bogies off the tee are the downfall, if I only had to worry about irons and in I'm at par or better, so my hopefully accurate guessing would be

Driver - 4

Fairway woods - 4

Irons - +2

Long wedges - 0

Short game - +2

Putting - +5

I am exactly the same with driver.  On days vs off days is a massive difference, when I drive it well the rest of the game feels so simple!

Never used to be that way so I am not sure what I changed.

I have no idea either and it causes such a wide disparity in my scores, from right around par to high 80’s, very frustrating.

Currently a 4.9 index…

Driver - 9 handicap… needs to better

3W - 3 cap… strength off the tee and good off the deck

hybrids - 3 cap… can hit them from anywhere with great confidence

long irons - 10 handicap… definite weakness, need to improve

mid irons - 5 cap… who I am

short irons/wedges +3 cap… by far the strength of my game

chipping/pitching -3 cap… pretty much a strength

Sand game - 5 cap…. Rarely in green side bunkers, but I’m pretty good

putting - 9 cap… another weakness

I really need to shore up the driver consistency as bad swings/loss of focus bring doubles which is the round killer. Putter needs constant work, I think I can be a great putter, just gotta get it going.

12.0 index

Driver - 5 cap - Soooo much better than any other part of my game right now.  Average 280, hitting 80% of fairways from last 10 rounds.  Pop 2-3 out over 300 each round too if the wind/bounce is kind.

3 wood - 8 cap - Good length, hit fairways off the tee, but need to improve off the deck.  Have 2 par 5 doglegs that prevent driver off tee, so 3 wood 2nd shot is needed.  Can get a little slicey off the deck.

Hybrid - 8 cap - Good accuracy, dont get that many opporunities to use it

Long irons - 14 cap - Working on them, but 4-5 iron dont always treat me well.  A couple of long par 3s often trip me up.

Mid Irons - 11-12 cap - Bang on where i am right now.  Decent, but can use improvement

Short irons/wedges - 8 cap - Decent but streaky.  Some days im on it, some days less so.

chipping - 8-9 cap - needs improvement.  Changed approach to chipping and its coming down

Putting - 18 cap - dreadful.  Im not one to blame equipment, but i feel i need to look at my putter as i just cannot get consistency.  Some days i roll it well, but all too often if im having an off day with approaches and leaving some long putts, i can leave everything short.  Even quick downhill putts.  Then il adjust and smoke one 15 feet past.  Im spending time on it, but something isnt working

@MtlJeff had one of these awhile back.  I can't remember if I responded, so I'll answer this one and then look back and see if I did and whether I'm fantasizing any more with these answers than I probably was before, lol.

Current actual handicap is 6.7 so I guess that needs to be some sort of reference point.

Driving - 10 right now, it's not great relative to other parts of the game.

Fairway woods - 7.

Hybrids (what's a long iron?) - 6.

Irons - 6.

Short game - 7.

Putting - 7 only because I putted better on Sunday, lol.

Need to hit more fairways with driver, tighten up short game and (ugh) practice putting - will probably just go out and play, lol.

6.4 hdcp

11.5 driving

5 Long Irons, FW woods

mid-short irons-3

wedges-9

sand -4

chipoing 5.5

putting-4.2

Explanation

Driving-About 11-12 thing is, it used to be like 4 until I started playing a power draw. It’s less reliable for my Fade bias swing, but it’s okay we’re working on it.

Long Irons, and FW woods- 5

probably the 2nd most confident part of my game. I hit my driver about 260-265 on a good day, lately it’s been like 250-255, but with my 13.9* G30 3 wood, every time on par 5s I’m happy to hit it off turf, it usually rolls to

About 240

Mid -short irons-3

easily best part of my game. I’ve always felt I can stand over with a 7,8,or 9 iron and I can stripe it within a 12 foot radius of where I want it to land about 9 out of 10 times. Not only that, but I play low lofted irons (32-7, 25-5,40-9) and I still hit them very high and get about a yard or 2 spin back with my 9-8 irons. That might be a problem but eh

wedges-9 (that’s being generous)

ugh wedges. I love my wedges but I hit the heel so much. I used to hit a draw but now I’m hitting like a fade that spins back 5 feet, and that’s if I don’t shank it.

sand-4

I feel quite confident. I feel like I can get it really close, and I feel like I can spin them a lot so I’m not scared at all when I’m shortsided. Unless it’s fairway bunkers, oh geez, fairway bunkers😬😬

chipping 5.5

also very confident. I can spin them quite a bit, but I’m also fairly good at reading break and knowing where to land the ball and doing that, so I do often chip in, I’m surprised if I don’t have a chip in a round.

putting 4.2

yeah h well I used to suck. But for a whole week straight all I did was practice putting and boom I back. I know expect my self to make about 90% of putts inside 10 feet.

and that’s it. I do feel like my short game is good, and it saves me and gives me this handicap. If I could start driving it well, I’d be a lot better.

How about this…played today… shot 78 on a par 71 at Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte, NC.

played the Ross tees from over 6700 yard. Rating was 73.0, slope was 142. Look it up if you don’t believe me, which you might not… lol.

I went 1/11 on birdie putts.🤬

Made: 4 footer

Missed: 30, 30, 20, 20, 10, 8, 8, 8, 8, & 7 footers.

9 of those birdie putt approaches were from using PW or less.

A shanked 9i and the topped 3W off the tee were my standard issue brain farts that go along nicely with my futility with the putter. Wedge game is on point though.

My GolfMetrics app provides this data via using strokes gained. I am a 4 index but have quite a bit of variability within the different areas of my game...

  • Driving: +3
  • Approach: 7
  • Short Game: 3, but 17 from the sand
  • Putting: 6, but 24 handicap on putts over 22 feet

I feel like it accurately sums up my game, I tend to hit it longish and very straight off the tee (272 average on my 75% of my drives at 70% fairways). However I am a terrible lag putter, which contributes to me averaging 33 putts per round.

Relooked at the card… missed one. I was 1/12 on birdie putts. Toss in another 30 footer to the tally… 10 birdie putts with PW or less. Hit 5 irons to 30 ft and 8 ft of two of the long par 3’s.

Average proximity to pin today (birdies putts only) with PW or less:

30+30+20+20+10+8+8+8+7+4= 145

145/10 = 14.5 ft

I say that’s pretty damned good.

GHIN is 1.4 right now, as low as it's been in a while. I usually hover between 2 and 3. I enter hole by hole with stats on GHIN, so that's what % are based on below.

Driving - 6 to 8 - Hitting 28% fairways, mainly because I use my 3w most of the time. I do hit it solid - just wayward.

Fairway woods - +1 to +2 - Good off the tee but LOVE my 3w/5w off the deck.

Long irons (3/4/5) - +1 to +2 - They just work and I have an unreasonable amount of confidence in them.

Mid and short irons (6-LW) - Scratch to +1 - Hitting 64% GIR off of 28% FIR.

Chipping/Pitching - 2 to 4 - just don't work on it enough

Scrambling - 0 to 2 - 60% up and down this year

Putting - 0 to 2 - Feels like i'm a 6-8 the first 4-6 holes...then +1-scratch on in.

Driver: Callaway Paradym 8* (draw, std) - GD ADXC 7x

3 wood: Taylormade SIM 15* - GD ADDI 7x

5 wood: Ping G30 18* - Diamana Blue 83x

Irons: 3-5 Taylormade 2014 TP MC (2* weak);  6-PW Taylormade 2014 TP MB (1* weak) - Project X 6.5

SW: Scratch 54* bent to 53* - Ctaper 130x

LW: Scratch 58* bent to 59* - Ctaper 130x

Putter: Modified Odyssey 7 w/ welded long slant

My friend, first of all, really nice round. Good job.

But nobody said you weren't a 4.9 'cap.

The skepticism expressed first by Obee and then by myself, was about your +3 WEDGE game.

A 4.9 cap seldom has the wedge game of a +3.

Other than putting I've never seen the guy that was SO much better at one part of the game than their cap would indicate.

I can see someone with a real weakness, relative to their cap of course, in a given area, but so much better than their cap for a certain area ? Haven't ever seen that.

Except for putting. I have seen some 10 handicappers putt like + cap players. Stands to reason I guess as anyone can practice putting in their living rooms. Not so easy to practice other areas of the game there though. :classic_biggrin:

Last time I tracked it was a few years ago, I was at 15. Went through an awful stretch of growing pains and neck and shoulder issues. I'm better than I was. Would estimate low double digits.

Driving - 20. I'm accurate but short. Take no joy in a ball that goes 210 down the middle.

Fairways - 10. Also very accurate, consistent contact, more efficient than driver.

Hybrid - 7. Favorite club. Good ball comes off of it.

Irons - 12. Recently fixed some long standing issues. I'd go lower here, but haven't been consistent for long enough to represent that.

Wedges - 5. Previous irons issues left me short and right for literal years. It was necessity to get close to continue being able to play at all. 100 and in I play above my pay grade.

Sand - 12. I can get out in 1 most of the time, but it's rarely pretty and rarely leads to a save. Some days are better than others, and fairway bunkers are no issue bc I'm a picker.

Putter - 12. No bragging here. Adequate, some days better than others.

I think we will notice that guys who miss greens with irons or are short and miss from far away have gotten above average with their wedges.

If I had exaggerated anything in handicapping my game, it may have been my putting. I said it was a 9 cap… it might be closer to an 18.🤬

These types of questions are always difficult to answer because people just don't believe you.

I was a +2 last year hitting it 235 on average. My BEST drives, at sea level go 245, including roll.

I have parts of my game that are pretty good. Driving is not one of them ....

I get it.

It wasn’t always a strength, it used to be my biggest weakness. I used to have no idea what I was doing with a wedge other than bunker shots. Every wedge was a moon ball, no control and I used to swing way too hard. About 5 years ago I’d had enough and spent an entire year focusing on wedge play. 90% of the range balls I’d hit were with wedges, mainly SW and GW.  Got much better and then found wedges that really worked for me and the light came on. Worked my azz off turning that weakness into a strength. It helps that a proper wedge swing is compact and not some full power shot like a driver, so I can hit a bunch of them while at the range. Even today, 60% of the balls I hit are with wedges. I always carry a worn out SW in my bag to warm up with (a 15th “practice club”) so I can keep the wear off my gamer (when I play I pull it outta my bag and put it in the bin behind the cart seat).
