1982 National Long Driving Championship: They Were No Chumps!

I just came across this video randomly.  Amazing how far they hit the ball back then, and with steel shafts and persimmon heads.  It is good to see young Freddie, Fuzzy, Lonnie, Payne, and other guys I grew up watching.

Some great old names there.... Big Cat, Andy Franks, Terry Forcum all brought back some memories.  McCommish played on and off the tour for a few years and he was a long knockin beast.  All those guys could truly MASH.  Persimmon era equipment too!

I recently watched the 1984 contest with the winner Wedgy Winchester and his 60" long driver. He carried it about 20 yards longer than everyone else, about 304 yards.

He was longer than that.  Elementary physics at play with a 60" driver.

Their driving distances were not as impressive as in 1982, maybe because it was raining that day at Shoal.

 

Wedgy, ha!  He must have gotten that name after too many kids pulled up his pants from behind.

He's using a 60-inch long driver?? I'm impressed he can even hit the ball!

I played with Wedgy in '82 - learned quite a few trick shots from him.

 

Western Golf Assn brought him in to do a clinic for the Western Amateur, but forgot to have someone provide activity for him prior to his clinic early in the evening.

 

Had a great member and also my high school golf coach round out the 4-some. Those guys had a round to remember for their lives...me, too!
