What is Putter Hang?

Scotty Cameron talks about putter hang as quarter, full, or face balanced. TP and David Mills use 5:00, 4:30, and 4:00. Can someone please explain this to me? I read on Scotty's website about this but to be honest, did not make much sense. What is putter hang and what is the hang of my Scotty putter? The only thing I can think of is with Mills' putters, using a clock reference, I can visualize a putter shaft parallel to the ground and the toe points to a point relative to a clock face.

The clock is the best analogy you can use. If you picture a putter balanced on your finger, the toe of the putter would be level and 3 o'clock. the "hang" refers to how much further past 3 o'clock the toe would be "open". a face balanced putter would not hang past 3 o'clock, but a face balanced putter is better suited to a straight back and straight thru stroke.

 

a putter with toe hang at 4:30 to 5 o'clock is better suited for an arcing stroke.

 

the arcing stroke is an take away = open to square to shut

 

a face balanced putter that is used with an arcing stroke can be a problem because the toe is shut all the time, resulting in a nasty pulls.

When a putter is face-balanced, the face of the putter will point to the sky when you balance the putter shaft on a fulcrum (your finger, for instance) with the putter face pointing skyward.

 

"Hang" refere to how much the toe of the putter will drop from that same position. So, if you had a putter with some toe hang, the toe of the putter would drop a bit when the shaft was balanced on your finger with the putter face initially pointing skyward. The amount of "hang" will dictate just how much the toe drops from a facing skyward position.

 

Some people think face balanced putters are best if you have a straight-back/staright-through putting stroke.

Does a face balanced putter help much with your stroke? I currently use a Ping anser 2 which has about 45 degree of hang ( toe) . I know that most people agree that unless you are using a belly putter the putter should move ever so slighly to the inside on the way back, but will you have an easier chance of doing that with a face balanced model over a quarter hang one?

I go back & forth between a rossie and a cameron newport. I don't notice a great amount of difference between the face-balanced and slight toe hang putters, personally. If anything, the rossie is a little better (but not much) in side of 6 feet -- I am confident, though, that this is the result of the indian and not the arrow.
