Someone hands you a $1,500 Check…

If someone gave you a $1,500 check to buy a putter what would you get with it? A $40 used odyssey and pocket the rest, possibly for lessons? A custom Olson, Byron, Mannkrafted? Second hand Hive Bettinardi? I hate what if questions but some buddies and I ran this scenario and thought it was an interesting topic

 

What does everyone think?

I'd go custom through goodwood, then use the rest for some rounds

Even if someone gave me $1500 I still couldn't spend that on a putter without feeling silly. My last putter was $35 and has been awesome. But I can appreciate some of the custom jobs, just could never justify the expense.

 

I still say if someone can find me a fake lefty Scotty for less than $100 I would rock the hell out of that. Especially if it was a really bad fake. 🤣

I'd go out and roll every putter that fit my stroke (maybe fitting?) then I would make the purchase and use the remaining to fund more rounds. 🙂

Well everyone above me is pretty boring. But $1500 can get you one sweet putter or 2-4 really nice putters so let's go over some potential options. These are all guys who do lefties so I'm gonna skip some who don't do LH or LH models I like.

 

I think #1 would be fly down to Artisan Golf in Texas and do a putter fitting that would be one hell of an experience and you'll get an awesome putter from it. Their putters start at $900 and go up based on the finish and options.

 

Next option would be a Cody James Putter, I really like his work and I don't think he gets the attention he deserves. I'd probably do a little extra on the putter with that cash seeing as his work starts at $950 and the extras like the Timascus logo are extra so maybe make it flashier than I would.

 

Although I have one but I got it used, I think a custom NCW would be fun, it's basically endless options on what you want to build maybe too many options. But they do feel great and balanced well, these start at 950 as well I believe.

 

TP Mills, I have one but would see what David has in LH to make a decision, these are about 700.

 

CMD Golf, he's doing some cool stuff, lots of head shapes and reasonable prices for milled to order. He starts at 600 so maybe get two from him.

 

Lajosi Putters, I'm waiting on 1 to be milled but I'm definitely planning a second. When I gave him what I wanted as a lefty nothing was up charge and he could do a 1 piece neck others can't or would charge more for me. His prices say 550 now but don't forget shipping from AUS. 

 

MannKrafted I've had 4 in my collection but currently have 0 so maybe it would be time to actually build a custom in my specs and keep it for a long time. His start at 500 and spec models are a bit less.

 

Compass Golf Co, he does what a lot of other guys do but for much less, milled to order starting at 400 can't go wrong with that.

 

So with all those listed and a few more I've skipped so this doesn't get too long. I'd probably do the Artisan as my #1 option for the experience, I've only heard good things when people go for fittings. Second would be the Cody James, I just admire his work and would get something amazing. Third would be a combo like a CMD and a nice Lajosi with some cash to spare for some lessons or a round of golf.

If I had to spend it on a putter, I'd get 3 or 4 nicer putters.  I love to collect them, and that would be an easy way to get some new models.

 

Otherwise, maybe just a Bettinardi Inovai 7.0 and the rest split between lessons and playing some nicer courses like Torrey Pines.

Olson does good work and I am very happy with mine so I would definitely look to have another one.

 

However, I would go with an Artisan first because they look very clean or another KB 9305 one piece but a standard plumber neck. 
 

Also would consider Cody James.

I probably would sell part of my collection and raise $4K in total. Then, I’d go buy a Scotty 009. I think 009 is running $4K. It was so out of my price range, and never bothered to check.

I would keep my current putter, buy the same brand but different head (second choice when I bought mine). That leaves me about $1300 and my irons need an upgrade.

I'd think about it after the check cleared. 😄  That said my last Scotty Newport was maybe $300-350 about six years ago.  Have putters prices risen that much?  Plus $1500 seems silly for any amateur golfer.  My last putter purchase was two weeks ago.  $130 for an old Ping Scottsdale Anser Beryllium Nickel in excellent shape.  I fouled up years ago trading in my new one (cost about $70 then).  Holding on to this one.  Works great!

I'd get me one of the new Scotty Champions Choice and then go and test it out at pebble and spyglass.  I'd have to eat ramen cause I'm pretty sure that would take up the whole budget but it'd be worth it

I'm going to the Goodwill to find some $2 putter and pocketing the rest.

Or, I'd go eat fried oysters.   A lot of them.

If I could pocket the leftover I would probably get fitted for a Seemore (I’m into them lately) and get some new irons.

I have a plenty of $25 to $350 putters that are great at missing putts, so I think I'm set.

 

Maybe spend $100 on a fitting, spend some on getting them adjusted as a result of the fitting.

 

Pocket the remainder or buy some drivers I won't be able to hit straight, or some blades to hit poorly..

 

The possibilities are endless!

I'd send both of my Anser Xs off to PING for spa treatments: tungsten weights, sound slots, new/improved putter-specific shafts, face milling, the works.  Whatever was left over I'd sink into some cool headcovers...
