Any Average Joes with Iron Swing Weight D5 or Higher?

Recommended Posts

Is anyone out there an average joe playing their irons with swing weight of D5 or higher?

I got fit for irons at Club Champion.  My SS with 6-iron was 80-82 mph.  As the fitting went on, I could feel the overall weight of clubs I was trying get heavier.  The fitter said in his opinion, my best combo of distance and dispersion came at D5 swing weight and D6 for wedges!  At the time, I kind of brushed it off...

A couple of weeks ago, I found 56 and 60 wedges in storage.  They were slightly longer than I normally play, but definitely heavier.  Took them to the range, choked down on them a bit, and my carry was longer (GW was 100 yards, when usually 85), flight was higher, and I had far fewer thin hits than I normally make.  Two separate online swing calculators (one using balance point and the other using component weights) suggest swing weight of D8-E0!  In contrast, the 50* Gap Wedge that came with my set is C7.  And, the set came in between C6-C8.

Since my 8-iron was an outlier at C4 on both calculators, I'm going to see if it can be set to D5.  I currently play Maltby TS-2 (hollow body, polymer-filled, players distance) with Tri-Gold stiff shafts which are ascending weight, flighted, with variable tip stiffness.

C6-C8 is what I would expect from either a set designed for ladies, or men's clubs cut down one inch with no swing weight adjustment.

I've spent a lot of time hunting down clubs that I can cut down and SW to a ladies petite set.  I'm old enough to need ladies flex and short enough to need petite clubs.

But I wanted something better than a box set.

I was adjusting the SW of my new driver yesterday with a can of foot spray and lead tape strips.

I bought it used and it was really light, but I wanted to practice with it to see if I could learn to control a long light driver. (equivalent of 47 inches for someone of normal height)

Even with two weeks of practice my strikes were all over the face, so I added two tape strips to bring it up 3SW points.

Sure enough, my next two swings landed in precisely the same spot on the face.  At this point I'm more concerned about consistency than accuracy.

Accuracy can come later.  I have an old 2004 BB to act as a control for my experiments.

What's in the bag, and how far do you hit 'em?

Cally irons/S400 HS. Edel wedges/S400. Titleist woods. Hit em far enough, I suppose . Not as far as some on here I am sure, but I thump it ok. Real thing for me at the heavier SW is more consistent contact, and more consistent results because of it.

1/2" over standard.  Not crazy.  Actually, should add I play Lamkin Crosslines in oversize.

You are fine at D5/D6 range then.

Worry less about hitting an exact SW value, and more on feel/performance.

Well, let the experiment begin.  Just grabbed the last roll of lead tape from my local Golf Galaxy.  My 8-iron was C4 (!) and my GW was C8.  Now both are D5.

It's actually better to work up slowly while actually hitting balls on the range (and ignoring the actual swing weight value for now).  Judge by feel and consistency of the impact and ball flight.
