Question on pulled UST Recoil 95 Iron Shafts - tip prep doesn's insert fully into Ping hosels

Bought a set of pulled Recoil 95 to install into Ping G2 irons.  The tip prep does not insert all the way into hosel.

I know these tapered shafts are meant to be butt trimmed only, but could I get away with trimming 1/4" off of tips

or maybe better to just mask off and spray with chrome spray paint to closely match the finish.

Installing ferrules is a no-go as the hosel is angled.  Fit would be a nightmare.

Did you buy .370 instead of .355? And yes Pings didn't come with ferrules until last few years I think.

No, I purchased the correct 0.355 tapered.  The paint is sanded off for install into the irons they came out of and that does not insert all the way into the Ping hosel so it looks rough at the junction (covered by ferrule in irons shafts came out of).  I can either tip trim them 1/4" (not recommended by mfr) or spray with chrome spray paint to blend it in best I can.

Gotcha, yeah sometimes Pings took a firm push to click into the base of the hosel but not sure why they wouldn't be seating down in it. Tipping them would be a bad idea IMO. Good luck.

They seat down...the tip was just previously prepped for irons that had a ferrule.  So now that sanded off painted area shows at the junction of Ping hosel and shaft.  I think I will chrome spray paint them and call it good nuf.

Simplistic solution

If the problem is that the insertion depth of your irons are less then the insertion depth of the irons they were prepped for  (it's really inserted all the way to the bottom of the hosel but some tip prep is still showing) then sure go ahead and tip trim a bit to clean it up.   That's not going to be any problem at all.  You'll probably have to reshape the taper - but the Ping taper is so non-standard that it's usually best to do that anyways.

If the tip of the shaft really is not making it all the way to the bottom of the hosel, then tip trimming is not the right solution.  You need to reshape the tip until it does insert all the way to the bottom of the hosel.

In addition to what Stuart_G stated, Ping's like the G2 have an interference fit hosel such that the shaft needs to be driven into the head in order to get it to bottom out.  With graphite shafts you can sand the tip a little to allow the shaft to seat so you don't need to pound the shaft into the head.  That's what I do anyway.

If you decide to tip the shafts 1/4" or so so the tip prep will be hidden it's doubly important to sand the tips down a little.  Only about 1/4" of the tip needs to be sanded, not the whole tip.  It's very easy to do.

Thank you.  I love the old G2s and the new Recoils.  I had to give it a shot with some inexpensive pulls off Ebay.  I ended up painting the prepped area that would not insert into the G2 hosel gloss black so that it is a "faux ferrule" look.  They are curing up now.

Follow up question.... I used 24 hour epoxy and my garage is 80-95 degrees so plenty hot for curing.  My left over epoxy

was already hardened up this morning after 12 hours.  Am I safe to hit them at the 24 hour mark or should I wait 48 hours?

I'd be surprised if they're not good to right now.....I use tour set w/beads and I've always good at 12hrs
