What Catches Your Eye When Looking For Irons?

Generally I look for irons that are left handed. That's half the battle right there. But my 2 sets of irons couldn't be more different. But I like a players iron that isn't too busy maybe. I guess I've paid more attention to the company behind it, that seems weird. 🤣

Always the 5 iron and then the 8 iron. The leading edge and relation to the front of the hosel as well as the what I call the crotch. The area where the hosel glands with the topline)

I know exactly what you mean. Have never understood the design philosophy of many a Mizuno PW.

It’s funny you say that. I LOVE almost every Mizuno iron they’ve released but every PW looks awful. If I played their irons I could never put the set PW in the bag.

Thin topline with little offset.

I'll add width and footprint to these^^^. It's hard to explain but I know when it looks right and when it doesn't. As an example; I was looking for a set to replace my J40's a few years back and never considered PING. A friend of mine handed me a S55 6-iron and said, "swing this". As soon as I placed it behind the ball I knew it looked right and I enjoyed playing them for 3 years. Same thing with '99 Hogan Apex and Tourstage Z101 CB.

They don't have to be super small with zero offset, but they can't be big or have too much offset.  I prefer an MB, MC, or CB style club with no "tech", no badges/polymers, and no color other than paint fill - which I'd prefer to be a neutral color (preferably black).  I'm finding I'm not a big fan of the v-sole found on some irons (Srixon, Hogan), but like a pre-worn leading edge like on some of the Bridgestone J series irons (I had the J15 CB's).  I don't like screws (PXG) or too small or odd shaped cavities or milling that traps a bunch of dirt.

I think the J15 CB head was probably the perfect iron for me and my tastes, but I got ride of them because I hated the DG Pro shafts.  I'm about to switch from Srixon Z965's to New Level 902 Forged.  The 902's check most of the boxes, except the cavity and milling can trap some dirt easily (my son has a set).

Thin topline, minimal offset, moderate blade length, thin sole. The sole is the most important because I don't take big divots, so I need something that gets into the turf very easily.

I want a topline not thick , minimal offset, overall blade length and height not compact and not oversized either,  The sole is important because, so I need something that gets into the turf very easily so turf interaction is very important. Nothing too busy on the cavity clean looks no fancy badges or lettering, has to be forged enough technology that lets you know after you hit them that there is something special about these irons than all the others that you may have played or hit in the past. Wow sounds like my Srixon ZX5

Agree on the PW. If it looks bad, it's a no go. After that, my general "wants"..

-thin-ish top line

-more square vs. round shaping

-a fair amount of bounce

-low offset

-lofts that make sense, in particular looking for 8 degrees between 8-PW. I can deal with (bend) a set that has a 9-degree gap, but 10 degrees between 8-P is just plain dumb. That will never gap right for me and I'll have to bend something more than I would generally want to in order to make it work. 4 degree gaps from 6-GW works best for me.

Minimal offset for me, everything else is second.  In most cases for me I'm ditching the PW anyway and going with a specialty wedge.  I'd actually love to see something like a 790 or medium sized CB with all of the tech except offset.  Just to see if it works for me.  A 790 or ZX5 with .5 mm offset could be alot of fun!

Not necessarily in this order but I need to check all.

Overall looks. I have to like the way they look in every way. Behind the ball. In the bag.( Yes I'm a wacko )

If I don't like the way they look no chance I can play them.

Not too much offset. But some is acceptable.

Sole. Grind, bounce

Overall foot print. I find the bigger the blade the harder it is for me to square and release.

Performance. Spin, launch and going through the turf.

Feel and sound.

I went in for a fitting not long ago and told the guy I'm totally opened minded. I just want the best performing iron for my senior body. After hitting many models it was easy to see the TM sim2 irons worked best for me. The backside of the head might not be the best looking club ever but at address it looks good to me and performed very well for my first round the other day.

My senior bag.......

Shiny ! Usually Titleist pulls my eye but been playing Callaway Mavrik. My eyes have turned to Mizuno 921 hot metals. Alas no Pro version for lefties.

Same thing I look for in my women.  Drop Dead Sexy to look down at, but still "easy to hit".

I will admit, the older I've gotten, the less important the topline or the "chunkiness" of the bottom, but I still won't stand for much offset.  I also want them them to gain "character" instead of "bag chatter" over years of use - they are tools, not jewels after all?

🤣
