It's great how many different players we're seeing.  Wish they would do this more in the coverage on tour

@Cwebb My guess is that the number of tv cameras/crew devoted to this olympics golf coverage = far outnumbers the tv cameras/crew they usually have on a typical LPGA event...

hopefully the interest in LPGA golf gets a boost, from being showcased at the olympics!

(albeit wouldn't it be more exciting/better tv, to have an edge-of-seats playoff for medals , rather than a runaway winner?)

Doubled the last.  Didn't see that coming.  A lot of golf to go, even if it's 'only' another 18

She hit her 3rd shot on 18 way way too fast. Might be the worst wedge shot she has ever hit in professional golf. Great round nonetheless. Still in a great spot after 36 holes. Especially if it is only a 54 hole event. That double on 18 lets some of the field back into the mix. To say nothing of it's tough to follow up a low score. Could be interesting coming down the back 9 tomorrow. Hope Nelly wins it of course. If not her then either Nanna or Emily from Team Denmark would be great as well.

Who was that silly guy prematurely talking 59?  Jinx never fails.  Kudos to Nelly on shooting 62. Wow that was impressive stuff.

@mosesgolfIf you're referring to the official OBS olympic feed , then maybe you're referring to Tony Johnstone  the regular SkySportsUK and European Tour commentator (formerly a golf pro from Zimbabwe/Rhodesia, along with Alison Whitaker)

If this does go the full 72 holes, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jin Young Ko come back to win it.  She's currently 6 back

Honestly even if it's 54 holes JYK could still win it. She hasn't yet shot anything crazy low in the first two rounds. Say Nelly only shoots 70 tomorrow, JYK get hot and shoots 63 and there we are. Should be interesting.

Yeah, she is due for a lower round.  She's just been barely off on a few shots/putts.  Could easily swing the other direction in the next round or two

I wondered the same too. Inbee hit driver on it and she’s not long.

The course has been set up really short, apparently a few of the ladies were talking about it playing very long in the practice rounds I dunno if organizers over reacted to that or what. 18 is listed 436 yards. Ko hit her drive with a carry of 215 yards over the bunker (that guys like Rory were catching in the mens tournament), and then had 136 yards into the green for her second shot.

With the greens firming up I can see why they moved up a few tees. The men were throwing darts into the soft greens. 'No fun hitting long irons and watching the ball roll over the back.

Really hope this goes the full 72 holes, but it's looking doubtful. As much as it stinks to cut it short, it would be worse if they started/stopped the 4th round, and had to throw out the scores.

The focus is rightfully on the top of the leaderboard, but what a round by Shanshan. I wish I could lay off golf for weeks/months at a time, and come back shooting in the low 60's. Lol.

Wasn’t there some speculation that ShanShan/Jenny will be announcing her retirement shortly after completing these Olympic Games?

Yes. I believe she was going to retire last year, but postponed it when the Olympics got pushed back a year.

I’ve never tried this but it would seem like it would get warm wearing them. I know the women use it to not get a tan but didn’t think it would be good for cooling.

It really works. I wear them now  for sun protection and the do make you feel cooler  especially if there’s a slight breeze it’s like arm air conditioning

I have a different view to maybe most on this thread about 54 holes to decide this result.

It's just not in the Olympic spirit, everything should be done to play the 72 holes for this.

You have Saturday and Sunday, use every minute of time to get 72 holes completed, obviously in a safe manner, no playing through  lightening or thunder to put the players at risk.

Who cares if they wait around, you want an Olympic medal, you just do it. Think of the great feats of endurance in Olympic events down the decades and what do we have now, a bunch of pampered powder puffs who complain about the heat. Why didn't you prepare properly?

Some of the players have made a big effort in understanding the expected conditions and preparing themselves mentally and physically to cope with them. Some missed The Evian to give their best here. Maybe some have just turned up because they got a position and their prep is just their normal practice prep. Olympic participation is about giving everything during the event and in the years leading up to it.

Golf won't be taken seriously as a real Olympic sport unless the players sacrifice and complete the event IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.  Find a way. Tee off at day break, get an hours play in between storms. Oh it's too hot, too uncomfortable - well, you're not running a marathon, are you? Sacrifice for a medal, for your country.

The weather is unfortunate but just do everything to get this done.

I'm dismayed about how blasé people are about this. It's the Olympics, the pinnacle of sports sacrifice and achievement......obviously not for golf.

They're not talking about cutting the tournament to 54 holes because of the heat and/or humidity. A typhoon is bearing down on Tokyo. There will likely be 40+ mph winds. As much as I want to see four full rounds, I don't like the idea of a crapshoot where some players catch a break with the weather, but the leaders bear the worst of it.

Nelly  has been on a meteoric rise this year. She is clearly world #1.  Her swing is up there with Mickey Wright.  AND gal can putt.

Hmmm, I dunno about that putting part. Yes, there are days when her putter is hot. However, there are days when it's a mini ice age. She's 13th in putts per GIR, and 19th in putting average. Very respectable, but given her ballstriking, they should be much better.

Yep, understand the typhoon forecast...any thoughts on The Open/British Open re wildly variable conditions dependent on tea times? Not typhoon conditions but can be big differences in conditions between say morning and afternoon times.

Of course a typhoon will be massively in excess of that, would make for some fascinating viewing though...hit, rinse, repeat.

I just want the authorities to not take the easier choice because, well, it's too difficult.

I want Olympic golf to grow to really mean something.

I thought they were already teeing off at 7:30 am local time. Not sure how much earlier they could start. Starting on both nines could help.
