Scotty Cameron Futura putter

Rarely seen in the wild these days but one guy in my league still rocks one.  I remember when this came to market and was the first $300 putter retail plus the  it's looks that made waves!  An original Scotty Cameron design and not a copy.

I had one for a long long time.   Never got over the fact it sounds like a cheap aluminum baseball bat.

I do... took a bit of buffing to get rid of dings, then extended it a bit and added the wristlock grip with the plastic replaced with Dippel leather.

I have a fantasy of Evnroll doing a copy new 'inspired by' version with the distance control grooves, and body made from titanium to improve the sound.

It was the first new putter I owned actually. Mine is a 2004 I think. They added the red sight lines for that year. And it's had an aftermarket weight in it since nearly day one. They are very light, sound, erm, loud. But man does it hole some putts inside ten feet.

My brother actually winds up using it a lot as a corrective/punishment putter. I prefer big super stroke type grips so I rarely use it. But if there had been a Kombi S type version where the face was steel it may have been a lot more popular.

KJ,

This was always touted as an original Scotty design, love it or hate it.  However, it was actually a design by Terry McCabe that got shelved for several years, until Scotty came under contract with Titleist and needed to show "an original design".  The McCabe version had never been promoted and was unique enough to really fit the part.   I have seen the McCabe version and there were a couple differences, but the raw design was easily seen as the same putter.  The biggest difference was the use of a flat section of a disc as a backweight on McCabe's version, where Scotty used that round bar, formed in an arc.   Other than that, it was the same putter.  I will try to get you some pix of the McCabe version, as there is one local to me that was a gamer for a few years.

The putter always had a bit of a ring to it, at impact that was not very pleasant to MY ears.  Other golfers loved the sound and had no issues putting great with this wand.  I think the only drawback came when you got one that had the shaft slightly misaligned and the head would fall shut or open, at address.

Design-wise, I love the fact that it is not just another Anser copy.

If you have a chance to pick one up at a decent price, I believe that you'd be missing out if you didn't give it a try.

Just one Mann's opinion,

I had one and gamed it for a couple years back when they first came out.  I purchased an aftermarket weight option that fit into the bottom of the track.  Overall a great putter wish I'd have kept it.

Went through dozens of putters looking for something that would correct an overactive right hand and poor distance control. Found the Futura and it started helping right away which gave me incentive to practice and within a year my putts per round dropped from mid-30s to 28. Between the onset shaft placement and having 75% of the weight in that rear horseshoe, it provided a unique experience and I played it from 2003 to 2006. I forget the exact head weight (which was different, depending on whether the putter length was 34" or 35" ) but the head felt light and sat open and I disliked the sound of the aluminum head and the overall look of it but I'd still be playing it except I came across Tom Slighter's very limited run of 25 Needle mallets which was a similar but more effective design and had one made to my specs, then got two more at different weights as backups.

My brother gave me his while I was in high school and it really helped me hone my putting stroke but I just couldn't get used to the sound. I know that shouldn't matter as long as the ball goes in but it was just loud. I kept it for putting practice when I got the yips but ended up selling it years later

I have the original from 2003 and am now gaming the black Phantom Futura (from 2005, I think).

While it sounds weird, I think this design has great balance/feel. The alignment line of the black Phantom really helps.

It seems the aluminum face doesn't wear well and it is hard to find a pristine one on ebay.

I also have the Futura X7, X7M and the 5W....the original Futura beats them all.

Scotty should bring this one back.

Well... i've been enjoying my Wristlocked Futura Starship Enterprise as seen above - and  am pleased with the wristlock grip side of things so will keep it as is for myself for backup/training and for a friend who has an appalling right hand flip when putting (has to be seen to be believed) who will benefit from the wristlock when we play together next... BUT

When I first got that Futura it had a big Superstroke grip (non wristlock) on it and I'd also liked how that felt... so when I became curious about the Edel Round putting grip, I checked to see whether there were any more old Futuras available on Ebay etc. Prices were fairly high and for very dinged up examples... with one exception - a refurbed one... and here it is with the Edel grip fitted (next to the wristlock version):-

It was refurbed by some guys in the UK - so for anyone in the UK looking for a refurb place here's a shot of the paper that came with the putter (can''t find any actual website for them though)

Do you remember where you got the weight for it? I have one but never use it. Feels too light. Would like to add a weight to it but not sure where to look for what to look for

Have to add an update - I've been using the one on the right above, with the round Edel grip.

Last round was after being away at work on an oil rig... so didn't touch a golf club for 4 weeks.

Came home, did NOT go to the range to practice. swung my old Leadbetter swing setter in the garden a couple of times.. and played a round the next day.

32 putts which apparently counts as decent/acceptable putting and this is me who has been an absolutely hopeless case... 2 birdies and 7 pars for an 83,

As a p.s. I've watched some the Dr Kwon videos and had already found it dramatically improved my chipping and pitching (and full swings) just because it kept me moving and athletic rather than static and frozen in terror at the prospect of stall-flipping a wedge over the green...

I wish there was a way to get the aluminum face refinished.

This aluminum part is usually the most dinged up and hard to look at.

Anyone know of a good refinisher for these kind of putters?
