Looking for a thrown ball...

Recommended Posts

So...  The past two weekends I have been playing in my city tournament.  On Sunday I got extremely frustrated during the first hole, I'll not go into the details except for being on the green.  The greens were stupid.  I had about a 15' putt uphill, I rolled the ball and it went past the hole by about 18", then stopped and rolled back down the green about half way between me and the hole.  I walked up, marked my putt and threw my golf ball.  Then realized I had to finish the hole with that golf ball and had to go look for it.  Honestly it didn't take me long to find it, maybe a minute.  But today during my reflection of my stupid moment I was curious how long could I look for the ball.  Does the normal 3 minute rule apply here?  Yes, I know it was bad etiquette, but it was not thrown in the direction of anyone else.  Also, when I got to the ball I reached down and picked it up instead of using my putter to scoop it up to me, although that was my first instinct.  I do not know if that would have somehow entailed a penalty stroke had I did that.

Anyway, that was my fall apart moment for the entire tournament, 4 rounds, it took me 4 holes to get back into a good mindset.

I'm assuming rule 5.6 would apply to your situation.

5.6 Unreasonable Delay; Prompt Pace of Play

a. Unreasonable Delay of Play

A player must not unreasonably delay play, either when playing a hole or between two holes.

A player may be allowed a short delay for certain reasons, such as:

  • When the player seeks help from a referee or the Committee,

  • When the player becomes injured or ill, or

  • When there is another good reason.

Penalty for Breach of Rule 5.6a:

  • Penalty for first breach: One penalty stroke.

  • Penalty for second breach: General Penalty.

  • Penalty for third breach: Disqualification.

If the player unreasonably delays play between two holes, the penalty applies to the next hole.

But this didn't apply...  I did not adversely affect pace of play as I was back on the green to putt when it was my turn... And it doesn't really answer my hypothetical question either.

Ian Poulter did similar and accidentally threw his ball into a pond after he marked it on the green  There was short time allowed and someone went wading and found the ball.  Ian made par.

That's funny!  So can't find the ball is a 2 stroke penalty, delay of play could add another stroke after a certain amount of time has passed.  But no idea how much time...

Since then the Rule has been changed a bit.  Now you must play the original ball, EXCEPT

Another Ball May Be Used When:

The original ball cannot be recovered with reasonable effort and in a few seconds, so long as the player did not deliberately cause the ball to become unrecoverable,

Rule 14.2a first Exception.

Poulter would have been OK, he didn't intentionally throw the ball in the lake.  For @trilerian, it doesn't sound like the Exception would apply, he did intentionally throw his ball.

The time search 3 minute issue has no relevance here, you were not looking for a ball in play. Having found the ball promptly and replaced and got on with play without causing undue delay, there were no rules breached. And picking that ball up with a club has no rules significance - again, because the ball is not in play.

If you had not found that ball so you needed to replace another to finish the hole, that would get the general penalty for breach of rule 6.3, substituting a ball when no rule permits that. And potentially a penalty for undue delay if you took too long doing all that.

However, you could also choose to play under stroke and distance for one stroke penalty (rather than general penalty for substituting another ball at the marker), playing again from where the previous putt was made.
