Will a more forgiving club help in this scenario??

My regular playing partner is having a hard time with hitting the ball left lately…big high hooks through all the irons!!

He’s a good player (4.9 index) and consistently hits the middle of the face with his irons…but is struggling with a closed face at impact meaning the shot goes left.

He is now thinking of going with a more forgiving club (plays 620CB’s) to try and help but I’ve said that this won’t help as he is hitting the middle….just with a closed face!!…it will be a total waste of money!!

Technically I’m right aren’t I..???? A more forgiving club will still go the same distance left if the middle is hit but the face is still closed the same amount ??…more forgiveness will not help at all???

I have both 620 MB and 620 CB sets, and a blend in the bag.  Those 620 CBs were purposely designed to blend with MBs, and be similarly workable, so not as forgiving as other easier CBs.

Losing it left is not a surprise either.  Sounds like his hands/grip are causing the problem, NOT 620 CBs.  Sunday, I lost a few left.  For me, it's caused by my hands being in the wrong position as they come into impact, closing the face, as a result of hurrying my swing though the ball.  This happens with my mid-irons mostly, since moving to lightweight graphite shafts.

A more forgiving CB may help to offset mistakes left.

Hooks are caused by face being too closed relative to the path - an important distinction. His face could actually be open at impact and he could be super dumped under coming from the inside. In any event, forgiveness in terms of lower CG or higher MOI is only going to help get the ball up if hit thin, or keep ball speed up if hit off center, it cannot improve face to path ratio. What can improve face to path ratio is perhaps different weighting/length/lie/user perception - all the things you discover in a fitting session. Long winded way of saying that a more forgiving club will not necessarily help his hook, and that (barring any swing changes) it could very well be that a less forgiving club could in fact help his hook.

Personally I would experiment going a little flatter to see if that helps.

A more forgiving club isn't going to change the face angle. Seems to me if he wants to stop the left miss he needs to look at A) changing the swing to correct the face and/or path issue or getting fit for a new clubhead/shaft that allows him to deliver the head more square consistently. Just going to a more forgiving head isn't going to change much here.

You are right, more forgiveness isn't going to help.

A change in shaft weight or shaft profile or grip size might fix his path/face angle.

If this guy has a pro he works with, he should take a tune-up lesson. Make sure it's not a set-up or motion problem before getting new irons.

Thanks guys for the responses.

I know what he is doing....he is increasing grip pressure during the swing in his left hand which is then turning the face closed (I got him to tighten his grip at address and you could see it).

It's come from a recent hand injury and that seems to be the problem....he was just getting fed up with hitting it left and looking for anything that will help including something more forgiving but couldn't see that it wouldn't help.

Now comes the part where we try and prevent gripping too tight!!

It probably has slightly to do with too strong of a grip and plus... mainly... hes probably closing the clubface on the way back... and closes even more on the downswing... i just went threw this and self correct it since 5 rounds... so i know what im talking about lol
