Why is the lie angle in longer length clubs lower?

E.g. The lie angle in a 4 iron is a few degrees lower than in a 9 iron

It's geometry.

 

All things equal, a club with a longer length will be farther from the player's feet, so to sole flat, the lie has to be flatter.

 

If you bought a single length set, the lies would be identical.

The longer the club, the flatter the lie angle has to be to sit on the ground at the same angle. If you lengthened the 9i to be the same length as the 4i, you would need to bend it flatter to sit the same.

Lets say your lie angle for a 37.5" club was 73.5* which is equivalent to a 7 iron, if you used a 38.5" club [equivelant to a 5 iron] am I right in saying the equivalent lie angle should be 72.5*? Mentioned here https://www.tesi-golf.de/Club-Length-Guide

wow that is upright.

 

for every 1/2 inch you add in length, the club will be 1 degree more upright and thus the lie should be flattened 1 degree to keep the same dynamic lie. so in your example, you lengthened the club by 1 inch, so the lie should be 2 degrees flatter. ie 73.5 -2 = 71.5

Actually it shouldn't be.  This is what many folks think based on the "static" geometry that the math calculations show.  What it does not take into account is shaft droop.  You will have more shaft droop in the longer irons than the short ones.  So if you proceed as you stated, your long irons will end up far too flat for most golfers.  It's best to dynamically measure your required lie angles using either the vertical marker line technique or a GC Quad.  You should measure every club and not just measure one and extrapolate from there.

Basic geometry.  Your hands are at a fixed height and as the club gets longer the angle formed btw the clubshaft and the ground gets lower and lower.

Can't say what your hands do, but mine definitely are not nor are they for most golfers.

The geometry/trigonometry isn't actually a linear relationship between length and lie angle.  Here's what the lie angles would look like based on the trig.  I took specs from Srixon ZX7, but kept the butt height the same for all as a 7 iron soled 0° to the ground:

 

 

It's a lot more drastic than the 1/2° to 1/2" progression that we normally see.  We don't want to do this because of dynamic impact positions of club/hands and toe droop like said above.

 

My hands, to my surprise, at address are all the same height from driver to lob wedge.  However, who knows what they are at impact and the amount of toe droop per club.  That's the reason for the vertical ball marker test, to check dynamically not statically.
