Disappointed with Bettinardi

This is why most putter companies use stainless steel nowadays. Even if not designed to patina, carbon finishes will wear with usage. Moisture, sand, storage, course chemicals, all have an effect on the finish, they require attention to keep them looking like new even if not being used. Most golf consumers do not understand this.

I bought a 2018 Bettinardi BB1 putter from the PGA golf store in 2020.  The putter was in brand new condition, never used and still in the wrap, and the PGA superstore is an authorized seller for Bettinardi. After less than a year of use, my putter began rusting and I contacted Bettinardi, to no avail.  Here was there response to me:

Our warranty is a one year from date of purchase if bought from Studio B, as stated on our website. as follows:
Bettinardi will only honor refunds/exchanges on items purchased directly from the Bettinardi online shop or in person at our Studio B facility. If your putter or wedge was purchased from another distributor, you will need to contact them directly as they will be able to provide more information on their refund/exchange program.
In order to receive a refund for a putter or wedge purchased via the Bettinardi online shop or Studio B, the putter must be returned new and in shrink wrap for a full refund to be issued. The product must have been received within 14 days to be considered for a refund.

To be clear, I didn’t get this response until I followed up three times.  The first time the rep, Pam, said the putter looked kind of beat up and asked if I use a head cover.  The second time she suggested I send it to them for refinish, which would cost me $200, when I only paid $180 for the putter new.  On top of all that, I never asked for a refund or an exchange, I just asked if it was normal for this model putter to rust like this, Pam took it to the dark place.  At this point, I’m absolutely disgusted by their customer service and product quality.  I’ll be selling it on Mercari very soon and will never do biz with Bettinardi again.  I just wanted to share this experience in case anyone wants to buy one in 2021, this is the level of customer service you can expect.  Pictures attached.

Aside from some of the bag chattering, I actually like it rusty more than the black finish! You could always have a place like continental golf buff out some of the dings and nicks and remove the rest of the finish if you ever decide to.

I like the rust. Tools not jewels as they say.  Jordan Spieth doesn't worry about the rust on his Scotty.

I was getting ready to say the same thing. It looks like it has made a bunch of putts. If I was playing against a guy with an old rusty putter, I would think I'd be in for a long day.

Agreed with the wisdom about carbon steel. I would never keep it in the trunk of a car with heat and humidity, that is literally what people do with wedges that they WANT to rust. Your headcover is likely hanging on to plenty of moisture, so combine that with the conditions and where you're leaving the putter and that is a recipe for quick oxidation.

If you love the putter and want a fresh start with it and maybe a more durable finish, send it to BOS Golf or The Putter Spa and have it restored/refinished.

EDIT: My gamer is carbon steel and was refinished by BOS in Black Oxide back around 1995 and still looks like this:

As a general statement, anyone who buys a carbon steel putter and complains about the finish, has no business buying a carbon steel putter.

I totally understand that "you didnt know" but this is EXACTLY why putter companies quit making putters from this wonder metal. Everyone complained out of ignorance.

I also dont understand why people dont put covers on there putters, drives me crazy 🙂

edit : coke bath and some fine steel wool will take off the rust, then rub down with some silicone oil.....that said, it looks way better as it is

Keepimg golf clubs in a hot car and maybe a bit more so in a hot trunk will do alot more damage then one would think... also can probably loosen hosel glues? Also might make the faces so warm and soft the ball presses into the face more on impact creating less ball speed? Lol jk on that 1. Its funny how we all knew theres no way the headcover was on after every hole 😆

Dude, that putter looks beat to heck. My guess is that you also got a "no" from PGASS?

I never checked with the PGA store, like I said before, I only contacted Bettinardi with a simple question, I never asked for a refund or an exchange.  Incidentally, this site has been exceedingly more helpful than their customer service rep.  The disappointment with Bettinardi is not with the product but their support.

I dont understand this tho. It was outside warranty time and they said basically you didnt do a great job of taking care of it. If ford has a 100k powertrain warranty and you take it in with 120k miles with blown engine-oh and by the way you failed to change the oil- wth you expect?

What’s your point? I asked for information, no more.  Have you even read this thread?

For whatever reason this take is hilarious to me.  I am happy to see you have now cooled off and intend to embrace the situation going forward.

Yes ive read it. Im not sure what you expect them to do or say…

We’ll, they could’ve said that your putter is carbon steel and is susceptible to heat and humidity, like others on this site have done. What about the concept of answering a question are you having issues with?

So let me get this straight. Your acceptable customer service response is basically something you can google.  You bought it, its kind of on you to know what you are buying…. Sheesh. Good luck man, but have a feeling this wont be your last rodeo
