4/5 wood advice

Kuuuch

Recommended Posts

I have been playing around with different 3 woods for awhile and I’ve come to the conclusion I really don’t like a 3 wood lol. I want to either get a 4 or 5 wood that’s got a decent amount of fade bias but is also decently easy to launch. My hybrid is a low launch bullet and in NC it typically rolls out close to as far as 3 woods I’ve had.

What brand/model recommendations do you have? I honestly haven’t been too in touch lately with reviews on recent clubs, still of course in touch with what’s been released but other than my 3 wood situation my bag has been pretty much set for over a year now.

Just from my limited testing (I decided last week to go the 4/5 wood route) I’m thinking maybe a ping g410 5 wood or sim max 5 wood but open to what you all really like then I’ll go try out some more combos.

if you can just find a new one somewhere/somehow, and be willing to install a shaft later, the Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 at 16.5* are delicious.

Agreed!

I play one at 42 inches with an Evenflow Black 85g 6.0. I added 4-5g to the head after cutting it down an inch  (1/2 butt 1/2 tipped) and it’s very versatile. I use it off the tee and deck with ease.

It sits a bit open to square which is nice. The adjustable 5 woods are decent for that as well.

I tested a few a while back and other than the TEE CBX119, the best performer for me by far was the Cobra F9 Tour 4/5. I liked it much better than the Ping and Taylormade offerings. If I didn’t get the TEE CBX119 16.5* for so cheap, I would have gone with the Cobra F9 Tour for sure!

It's going to depend on what exactly you're wanting this club to do...

I play G410 SFT 16* small + = 17* but it has 2 purposes-

1. Anything above 205yds - just to have a 200yd+ club in the bag

2. Specifically anything between 190-212yds......I hit this club certain yardage 90% of the time, so accuracy is the #1 goal - not straight out distance from 205yds+ - so the first rule only applies on 2nd shot Par 5 lay ups or stupid long 2nd Par 4 shots

Distance or accuracy is the only answer you need

The Callaway Rogue 4 wood is one of my favorites. A shape and overall size that suits me. Bonded hosel. I put a HZRDUS Yellow 76g shaft in it and it’s great.

The others ones I like are the Mizuno ST-Z 5 wood and also the newest Srixon.

Hmmm I totally forgot about the new Srixon's. Might have to give that a try, I hit one of my friends at the range and it was good. Should have mentioned distance isn't a factor in this decision, pretty much just accuracy. I really don't hit a 3 wood much when I play except for on par 5's which is pretty rare because my home course has 2 par 5's, one I'll always hit an iron in and the other is a mammoth that I don't go for unless the wind/pin location is right. Only other time I'll hit a 3 wood is when I am forced to on a hole with a tight landing zone where a driver might run out too much.

Arguably my favorite club in my bag is my 4w - an older Cobra F8 with Tour AD IZ-7s. Super long and controlled. I can't see that club leaving my bag anytime soon whatsoever. It's great both off of the tee and the fairway. The rails make it so easy to hit off the turf.

I play a Ping G410 5 wood that the standard loft is 17.5. I have it set to the lowest loft which is 16 and play a 43 inch shaft. It is very easy to hit off the deck and is long off of the deck and off a tee.

I was fitted a few years ago for Ping G400 woods. The stiff 5 wood, down 1 degree with a half inch longer shaft outperformed the 3 wood for carry and total distance.

Not playing a fairway wood at all right now. But I last had a Mavrik 4 wood and an epic flash 5 wood that I turned to 17*. The 5 wood was easier off the deck and the 4 wood easier to hit off the tee and I rarely hit it off the deck. I liked them both for what they did.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

"Full" bag currently looks like this:

Taylormade BRNR Mini Copper 13.5

Callaway Rogue or Epic Speed 4wd.

Epic speed may have a bit of fade bias, at least for me.

The Rogue was straight to slight draw.

Add favorite FW shaft.

I am partial to my 4w I got this season.  Callaway Mavrik Subzero.  I used to game the TM M2 3w and 5w, but replaced both with my new 4w.  The TM woods were left machines, the new one I can hit a fade with.

Just because no one’s said it.

Titleist TSI2 5 wood(18degree) is perfect. I’ve dropped my tour edge ex10 16.5 for it. The tour edge was hot, but really was too long for the shots I needed.

my TSI2 is turned down to 17.25 loft and flat, which gives me a pretty dependable left to right flight. It’s shallow faced and feels awesome, if that’s important for you. It’s about a 240/260 carry from the deck and tee.

all the major brands are good and will have an option for that loft. I like the shorter shaft of a 5 wood than the 1/2 in or inch longer shaft in a 4 wood. It’s a nice high tee ball when I need it off the tee, but still has nice rollout from the fairway. I also play a low lofted hybrid for tee shots that I want all the rollout.

Playing G410 5 wood (17.5 degree set to 16.5 degrees) with a 3 wood length shaft. On trackman I hit this 5 wood as long as the G410 3 wood due to better launch with the 5 wood. Also i like the smaller head of the 5 wood.

Cobra's 4/5 wood models over the last few years have been very good.  The 4/5 is standard at 17.5* and adjusts to 16*-19*.  Regular and Tour models offer forgiveness and are easy to launch off the tee or turf.  I play the F9 Tour model and love it.

I've carried an adjusted TS2 16.5' 4 wood since TS2 line was introduced.  Not sure exactly why, I like that its more useful, as opposed to 3wd.  Five "5" wood never impressed me.  I still prefer a well struck 2 iron.

Radspeed 5 wood set at 17* playing at 42.75" is an absolute missile launcher.  Opens the face 1.5* and is so easy to launch.

The ts2 16.5 was good for me.  They can be had for cheap.  The tsi2 I’m sure is even better, though I haven’t hit it.

sim2 max hL  would be the another one I’d want to hit.

Ping Anser 4w on the flat setting has been in the bag for a year or so now. Before that, nothing was able to stick in that spot.  I may look at an upgrade now that the G425 fairways have the turbulators removed, but I'd be more than happy to play the Anser 4w for a very long time.
