Help with Ping Driver shaft length

Hello, I have question for you guys if someone knows.

I have Ping G425 LST driver and Hzrdus Smoke RDX shaft unprepped.

I want this shaft to be around 45.75 or 46 installed.

How long should the shaft be from tip of Ping adaptor to end of shaft, without any grip installed.

If the shaft  measure 45.75 in head without grip it should be perfect.

Thank you

If you already have the head and shaft and adapter,  cutting the shaft to length should ALWAYS be done by dry fitting the head in the shaft with the adapter at the desired setting and measuring out the playing length on a club ruler (it's easy to jury rig a DIY club ruler if you don't have one).

There are just too many different variations in measurement methods and techniques to make any such measurements made by someone else useful.

The only time that particular question you asked is useful is if you haven't bought the shaft and are looking at buying a used shaft and want to make sure it will be long enough for the playing length you want.  Even then you should always recheck when you get it as some adjustment might still be needed.

I think Stuart nails it for me. The only thing I would add is that if you have never prep'd a shaft before, make sure you check the manufacturers site to know how much to tip the shaft prior to installing the adapter.

I don't know of any shaft manufacture that recommends any tipping for a driver these days.   Might have been the case in the past when there were shafts that were designed with longer tips for bore through heads - but not any more.

The recommendations of the head OEM's should be ignored.

If he was playing it shorter and heavier, maybe - but unlikely going to be needed for most reasonable head weights at the OP's desired playing length.

True enough, thanks Stuart!

Thanks guys, the reason for asking is buying a shaft second hand.

Im gonna buy the Hzrdus Black Smoke RDX but I need to find one that's long enough to tip 1 inch and cut to length.

Sorry.  Your first post said you had the shaft.

Haven't measured that one but all of the latest Ping's I have measured had a BBGM of either 1.75" (more likely) or 1.5" (less likely).   Those are also like industry standards for head design for std bore driver heads so that same statement would be true for any OEM full size driver head (although TM is the one exception and has made a few heads with 2.0" BBGM over the years).    That's the amount you add to the cut shaft length WITHOUT an adapter to get the playing length.  If you want to be safe, use the 1.5" value.

The adapter extends roughly 1/2" beyond the tip (it can vary a little based on the installation).  But if you want to tip it, better to buy one without an adapter and you can use those BBGM values above.  You don't need to convert the shaft length with the adapter to a playing length.

Sounds like you should get a new one

Yes, I "had" the shaft and a couple of others trough a friend of mine.

But wanted to ask first before doing the deal.

I found out with the help from you guys that the shaft was to short for my setup, so thanks.

I ended up buying a new hzrdus black rdx tx online 🙂

I have also borrowed a Ping Tour 65X witch plays exactly 45 to use as measurement, since im not a highly skilled club builder, haha

Thanks guys, really appreciate it!
