Should I be concerned.

Recommended Posts

I bought new irons for the first time in many years. I settled on the Titleist t200 irons in November. These irons look and feel great and they’ve been performing for me. I have 75 rounds in the books and numerous range sessions so the irons are starting to show some very mild wear and tear. Last evening, I am cleaning my irons and giving them a closer than usual inspection. The 6 - PW are showing the typical wear spot in the center of the forged face. The 4 and 5 iron are showing the wear spot off center and closer to the toe than us desired. My irons were fit 2* flat with S300 black, stiff shafts. The clubs seem to fit me, at least the fit is correct 6 - PW, but could it be off on the longer irons? Or perhaps the fault is with my swing? FWIW, I am a 4-handicap and a pretty good ball striker, but I am also and old fart and maybe my swing is aging as well.

My guess is either you need a different lie angle on the longer irons, or the lie angle was off on those out of the factory and needs to be bent to what it is supposed to be.

It's not uncommon to have different lie angles within your irons. I do. Mine vary from standard lie to 1* upright. Most (not all) fitters will fit you into one lie angle for all your clubs because that works for 98% of amateurs.

If I were you, I'd go to someone you trust with your current clubs and see if the lie angle was wrong initially and needs correcting, or if you just need a different lie angle with those specific clubs altogether.

Examine closely the 6i and 5i. Lie the 6 on top with the shafts lined up. You should be able to see if anything is off significantly.

It’s a good idea to have your loft and lie angles checked once per year - especially considering your number of rounds.

And as others have mentioned, some guys don’t have a “standard” progression. Perhaps you need a more upright angle on the 4 and 5. I have the same lie angle on my 9i, PW, GW, SW, & LW. Because I’m tall and they all are almost the same length. It works for me.

Hope this helps,

M

I think this is what most people are referring to when they hear/say "wear spot".  What you have there is a battle scar or chunk of character 🙂

No wonder I can resell my golf clubs on the BST real quick since I never see those spots develop on my irons.

I think the recipe is to hit an awful lot of balls, good strikes (or at least consistent, I guess you can technically get a wear spot on the toe or heel 😆), soft forged steel face, sand rich/abrasive soil. If you hit clean range balls off a mat and play a couple of rounds per week, you'll probably never see it.

Probably right. I rarely go to the range hence my game being stuck in the mid to high 70's and I play about 1 a week if I am lucky twice.
