2021 Golf Ball Test

Weird, it must be a geographical thing. I hardly ever see sleeves anywhere, unless they're promotional. But I can't say I've ever seen the premium balls in sleeves just sitting on a rack for sale.  I've never asked a pro shop to break up a dozen though, I'll try that next.

Thanks for all the replies!

Just ask if they have sleeves for sale at whatever place you go to next time.  They are almost always located at the checkout counter (not with the other balls): a shelf built into the counter, a rack on top of the counter, or visible behind the counter and you have to ask for them.

This was most likely answered somewhere, but how are they getting a 300y carry with a 168 ball speed?

And who hits a 185y 8 iron an gets an additional 15y of roll?

I asked this too, and I got some answers along the lines of "it's normal in the desert". (but trackman doesn't do radar on the roll-out, does it?)

My curiosity is still not satisfied either!

I just can't mentally visualise the shots!

They were hitting on a range, not to a green, where it would bite and stop. I get around 290 carry with ball speed around 165-170, all depends on the spin and launch angle

Saw that the loft of the PXG 8i was jacked, equivalent of most 7i’s. I believe they also mentioned temp and elevation as factors as well

Does Trackman's radar track the ball's roll-out? Or is that extrapolated based on inputs from the operator?

Because they didn't physically go out there with measuring tapes.

I believe they had people in the field if I recall correctly, they talked about the testing protocol on the podcast.

I listened to it at the time, and I don't remember anything about that. And I can't find any references to it now either.

If anything, if they had fallible humans manually measuring roll-out, that'd call the whole test even more into question. A forward bounce on a hump vs. a backwards one can be at least 10 yds difference either way. So a deviation of 20 yards depending on where on the range it lands is too big to draw any conclusions from.

And I reckon they're aware of that, so I'm not sure I'm buying the whole "range roll-out in the dessert" kinda thing.

Note though - I don't actually distrust them or think anything fishy is going on. I'm not calling their results into question, I'm just very interested in the mechanics of it all.

I don't understand why they even acknowledged the temperature, wind, desert conditions, elevation, roll, etc.

Just normalize the QC Quad and go with the numbers right off the unit.

No one is hitting a 185y 8 iron and expecting 15y of rollout. I understand the conditions but it makes the dataset look unrelatable.

PXG are super strong lofted, so in essence, that's a 7 iron. 15 yards of rollout on a fairway is pretty normal for a 7 or 8 iron

I'm not even a member there, but at least they are trying. Seems like other forums just collect the money from members and sponsors and provide little to no real comparative data other than WITB photos from tournaments. I'm sure the data isn't flawless but it is about the most complete and best data ever provided on that number of balls.
