Artificial Green maintenance

Recommended Posts

We have recently moved into a home with an artificial Green that has not been maintained. Looks to have mold and mildew growing.  I'm having a devil of a time getting a company to even return my call to come look at it and estimate what it would cost to get it back in tip top shape.

So I did a little research and ended up renting a plate compactor to loosen up the sand under it and have used a heavy duty broom to try and scrape the junk off the top then tried mold and mildew killer from Home Depot but I can't get the stuff off the top

What else should I try?  The broom brings up some of the sand and seems to get rid of a lot of the mold (black stuff)

It's rolling slower now at least. No longer a 35 of the stimp. LOL.

You can see the stuff growing here and the sand and mold from sweeping

Is the sand suppose to be there?  Like this product https://www.heavenlygreens.com/artificial-putting-green-turf

If not, then you can try a wet vac like you would use to deep clean carpet.

You can try a brush attachment to a power drill: https://www.amazon.com/Scrubber-Cleaning-Extended-Attachment-Revolver/dp/B07G7XG6BV

IMO, I would try a power washer starting at low power levels to see what gives the best result and use with a mold and mildew product or a small amount of bleach. They actually make a specialized broom for these. IMG_3414-1280x853.jpg You will probably need to replace some of the sand or pellets and top it off to get it to a decent speed after removing all the junk from the surface.  Or keep calling different companies and hopefully get a decent person to help. 🤠

Yes, the sand is supposed to be there.  I like the brush on the drill idea, save my back some with the broom maybe.  Thanks

I thought about pressure washing but was afraid of losing too much sand and having to learn how to put it back.  lol.

I've called 4 different companies.  one flat out told me no Iwhich I can appreciate) and the others won't call me back

I would have written the cost of maintenance into the purchase offer and put it back on the seller.  But, then again, I would never purchase a home with a putting green.  -

Well the green certainly wasn't the reason for the purchase.  I figured it to be an added bonus and it might get taken out in our backyard renovation plan which is why I don't want to put a ton of money into it.   If I can clean it up and use it then so be it if it goes away that's ok too.  I never imagined that the many turf companies. in Atlanta didn't want any work

It's like hot tubs.   Once they wear out, they are junk.  You'd be better off getting a new "putting surface."

pardon the terminology, ref. cliche thread

Bleach mixture with a couple drops of blue dawn in a sprayer. Spray whole thing, this should start killing any algae. Mold will be harder to remove.

But you can rent a power broom to reshape the sand. Sometimes the sand gets thick and thin due to wind etc. Once you have removed most of the sand I would replace it with cleaner stuff. Get bags of play sand and use a drop spreader, then power broom it into place. If stimp is too high, power broom out the area and do it again.

Its a labor of love to be sure.
