Srixon ZX Utility

Lot of 785 to ZX talk on here right now so might as well keep it going. I have a U85 23* that I am thinking about upgrading to the ZX 23*. Looks aside, (pretty clear the ZX is more streamlined, sleeker, thinner sole, less offset), is it worth the upgrade if you don't actually mind the looks of the U85? Does forgiveness lack some with the smaller head?

i just got one. I really like it. Stock shaft in it right now. Easy to flight high or low. Very nice feel. I have hit 90% of the driving irons on the market and this one is the best feeling to me

Nice yeah, I was looking at the recoil in it too not my first choice of shafts but it should work fine.

I just received my ZX Utility 2 (18*) and am incredibly excited to try it out. I decided to go with the exact same shaft as my irons (Modus 3 105 X on ZX7s). I hit a number of Utility irons, varying heads and shafts (steel and graphite), and for some reason the Modus 3 105X shafts are like the perfect extension of my arm. I'm stoked to replace my aged hybrid with this driving iron. Will report back!

Never played the U85, just the U45 and ZX. Not sure what the forgiveness looks like on the 85 but I can at least give you some input on the ZX. The ZX is very easy to elevate but doesn't balloon and the sole gets through the turf much easier than the wider sole utilities. To me that is a level of forgiveness. I find the face fairly forgiving almost everywhere. My only gripe is toe side misses. I have a GCQuad and have noticed spin drops about 800 rpm on a toe side miss. Tried both the stock recoil and MMT 100 TX Hybrid and both were a little too soft in the mid section for me so I landed with a Tensei CK Pro White Hybrid. Best utility I have played and I have played quite a few of them.

I will post back once I finish today's range session. The zxu originally had a tour ad 85 (not hybrid) but I pulled the 95 fiber out of my u85 and put it in the zxu so will be an apple to apples

I like hearing this as I've wanted to try the ZX for a while.

I play the U45 23 over my z745 4i most of the time. It's great off the tee and a decent lie. My two gripes with it are the wide sole and height. Some of this is shaft related, as I have the NS Pro 1050 in it, but it isn't the easiest to knock down and If I go after it, it can balloon.

I do like hearing the forgiveness is still high. The U45 is hot all over the face so I'm willing to give up some playability. It's the club I use when I absolutely need to hit a fairway and my swing is off.

OK just got back and here's my  .02

Looks: see below

Feel: zx u

Flight: u85 goes higher

Forgiveness : u85

Sound: zxu more crisp u85 more thump

Looong time srixon user before everyone else jumped on.  As my handicap is predominantly due to suck age off the tee, I spend a lot of time with the DI. Have played some variant of a driving iron at the 4 position going back to 588 Mt (still have BTW)

Longest tenured was the u65 as my misses tend to be toe side. Honestly, I dont think there's much difference between any of them. Ie you're not shaving strokes off your game because of one vice the other. What I will say is the zxu feels more... Refined I guess is the best way to describe. It also looks more like a traditional 4 whereas the other ux5s were definitely exusing driving iron. Again to some that may matter but I refer to the pics below.

It will come down to budget and preference really. I'm very happy with the zxu and think I would prefer it despite not being as forgiving. But you could throw a 95 fiber in any of the previous iterations and I could game it.

It does everything better performance wise than anything Srixon made prior. I’m also swinging in the 120s and don’t struggle with stock x at all.
when they slimmed it down they made it much easier off the ground and out of rough as the u85 struggled with that.
only down side is the hollow sound at impact. You know it’s a hollow club but it performs beautifully

I have not tried the previous versions but I really liked the looks of the ZX and picked up an 18 degree 2 iron. Initially I did not like the stock recoil shaft in X flex. I decided to give the ZX a fair chance and put a nippon 105X in it. I play the 125X in my irons. So far I am really liking it. I have really only used it off the tee when playing, which is why I purchased it, and it goes straight and far. Although it's not a shot shaping club I can get the ball to work a little bit in either direction. Generally playing for a draw to get a bit more roll out of it. As an approach club I have yet to try it off grass except for on the range. It's turf interaction is good, it glides nicely through the grass with an extremely shallow divot. For me this club swaps in and out of the bag with my 4 wood and in comparison shot height is much lower which is to be expected from a utility 2 iron.

I have the 20* and haven't had much time with it yet but it isn't bad.  It is very forgiving on and off of the tee.  I still think the 790 UDI is the best driving iron but the thinner sole make it a bit challenging off of the turf at times.  At this time, I do think the ZX is a better all around club.

I think I am in the minority here but I actually enjoy the hollow pop sound of a utility iron, it just makes it sound hot to my ears and different/more powerful than a regular iron.. I just ordered a 23* with Recoil F5, can't wait to hit it

Reporting back. This is my first Driving Iron and wasn't 100% sure how to hit it. Was setting up and trying to hit it more like an iron and realized after 20 balls or so that wasn't the way. Sweeping motion with a similar swing to my 3 wood has resulted in a very long and straight-ish shot shape. I tend to fade the ball slightly so it follows suit but overall, very soft feel, especially with the Modus3 105X shaft. Crisp sound off the face. I have a feeling it isn't the most forgiving but again, not an expert on these utility irons. Definitely going in the bag to replace the hybrid.

Did you hit the ZXU 4-iron vs the u85 4? Seems like the 2 would naturally be lower launching and less forgiving than a 4 otherwise.

ZX 2i probably one of my favorite clubs in the bag. I hit the ZU85 a long while back and also enjoyed that but never bought it as I wasn't playing seriously at the time.

My experience hitting the U85 is what made me blindly order the ZX off the internet more recently when I was upgrading my whole bag. Both are great, I don't think they're much different at all in the greater scheme of things.

If I were you I think it would be a pretty superfluous upgrade, almost certainly not worth the money.

The only thing I dislike about the U85 is the side of the club looks like it has "ZUBS" written on it which is a frankly ridiculous word.

Fair point. I did not hit 4 iron vs 4 iron. However, the ZXU 2 doesn't launch any higher than my previous P790 UDI or X-Forged Ut while the U85 4 iron I find to launch much easier than other 4 irons I've gamed/tried.

I have to admit, that sounds awesome.  I'd probably have to call it my Zubs iron

I have the 4 and 2 iron in the ZX. I prefer the 4 iron. The 4 is wayyyy more forgiving than the 2.

Makes sense that you like the U85 bc it’s gotta big ole a** on it that makes that ball launch 🚀
