Ping G425 iron head flew off

Recommended Posts

I hit an approach shot with my g425 6i today and the club head flew off.  I was in the middle of the fairway, contact felt clean, not fat or thin. A bummer to say the least.

The head is fine. The ferrule is definitely cracked. The shaft looks to be intact, at least to my untrained eye.

Should I bring it somewhere local and get this fixed?

Or should i go directly to Ping?  Id rather not send it in given the well documented log jam at Ping as of late.

send it back to Ping.  Warranty repairs are taking about 7 business days once they get the club. 2 weeks total with shipping time.

Working with the "new" Ping irons is a PITA.  Send it back to Ping and get it done.  Odds are, any local guy won't have the correct parts to do it right.

What parts are you talking about? That's a collared ferrule, some dried up epoxy and the shaft. Pretty straight forward to fix unless it's graphite and you suspect it's knicked. You'd have it back in a day getting it re-glued locally.

It is graphite but it looks intact.  There's an authorized ping fitter/retailer nearby. I'll see what they suggest — either they can fix it or facilitate sending it back to Ping.

The issue with the G425 iron is Ping inserts a weight in the hosel and toe to balance the club.  If that weight's not there it will have to go back to Ping. Their database will know the correct part to use.

I agree with this, but at the end of the day it's a tip weight and you can do a swing weight check on the other irons to find out what they spec at and figure it out from there. It doesn't matter, he'll take it to the Ping retailer and they'll get their panties in a twist and send it to Ping to "not void the warranty", even though this isn't rocket science and Ping makes you think it is.

Thanks for the insight on the hosel weight.  I didn't think to look for that when the head flew off (not that I would have been able to find it out on the course).

PING has long used some pretty non-standard ferrules and ferrule sizes so Socrates is right, send it back to PING and they will take care of it unless you know someone that specifically has experience with PING clubs and has the right parts.

There is a tip weight that may or may not be there any more.  The collared ferrule specific to these new Pings.  You can’t just use any collared ferrule.  Even with the proper ferrule it is a sloppy fit and many guys never get it properly centered.   Not saying it can’t be done, but it can easily be screwed up.

New style Ping irons have hosel weights so the interference fit feature is not there anymore.

You can read all  about the new Ping hosel design as detailed in this thread about my struggles with keeping shafts  inside my  G410's.

This is true.  It can be repaired locally.  However since these are new clubs I'd send it back to Ping for correction. Further, I'd send the entire set back to Ping (during winter time). Watching online videos of Ping's factory assembly they appear to make one batch of epoxy and use it for the entire set. So if it was bad epoxy or not mixed properly other clubs may be next to fail.

thanks

seemed much simpler when you could  sand the shaft tips and whack them on a hard surface

hardest job was getting the shafts out not keeping them from flying off

I had 921HM back in Dec. lost a 5 iron head in the snow. Mizuno’s said they couldn’t do anything until I got the head. Well I never got the head back and Mizuno refused to do anything and neither did the company I bought them from. Ended up having to do a charge back

You lost it in the snow ? Were you in a Russian Forrest ?

And seriously you wanted them to replace your head for free
