I have seen it all! - laser for measuring putts

Played with a guy the other day that uses a laser measuring tape (the type you use to measure a room) to measure putts.

I thought it was odd, but to be honest it was non-intrusive. Much less hassle than the guys who pace it out.

I actually did something similar for a period when I try to figure out what my putting weakness is.

I think this is good for stats collection perspective, but it is pretty poor if the players try to putt based on measured distance.

Call me old school but I'm skeptical.  How does it factor in speed?

It doesn't. I am not saying it is a good or bad thing. I am a feel putter so I do even understand how it works for guys that pace off long putts.

I just found it interesting that to see someone lasering his putts.

I guess if you pace off putts this would be a faster easier way to get the distance. I can't say I pace off a putt, but I will walk along the line if I am confused to get a better sense of it.

Well hopefully that didn’t slow down play too much.
I’m of the old school, look at putt and then hit it. If I start analyzing putting then I start missing. But other people are the opposite.

OK. Probably best used as a training aid. I’ve seen gadget crazed golfers use lasers for 30 yard pitches. Anything goes lately. I remember when I started playing many years ago  you went out with a bag of clubs, some balls and tees and simply played.

What’s the new measure. He made 120” of putts.  Guessing that helps with that.

He did not at all. It was very fast.

They’re using an app like the TM’s Myroundpro. Since they use your phone’s GPS, they don’t “do” putts, since the GPS lacks adequate accuracy, and you have to input the distance manually. The player is then distracted between holes as they enter their critical putting data.

@LouStagner does this.  He’s the numbers man who’s teamed up with @ScottFawcett.  I say if it doesn’t hold up play and helps you make more putts (either through better info both on and off course), go for it!

What’s wrong with lazing short game shots? I’ve found that 5 yards matters a lot more when I’m 30 yards away than when I’m 150 yards away.  I like to shoot my landing point, and it gives me confidence that I’m using the right club since I have my stock finesse swings for each at 10/15/20/25/30/35 yards. It makes a huge difference and doesn’t slow play. If I had a pin sheet that gave me actual distance on or a caddie to provide the yardage it would be a different story, but the laser is clutch for short game.

I once played the longest round ever with a good buddy and his friend who he semi-affectionately refers to as "The Human Rain Delay."

THRD lasered EVERYTHING. Then he put his laser down, played his shot, and walked off without his laser, requiring him to go back and fetch it while the group behind us was playing the hole we just finished. Over and over and over again.

Did I mention he was playing in flip flops?

How many times did you think about walking off..
