Actually he shot 64 today….birdied the first 7 holes on the back nine to shoot 29 coming in.

One of my pet peeves is that most people don't understand how many different levels of performance there are between a reasonably solid am and an elite pro (because they haven't been there and experienced it).

 

This applies to any sport. "That guy is useless!". No he isn't, he's just not quite as ridiculously good as the other freak athletes on the team.

Sounds like he's locked in on a heater... I know they are super tough as has been documented, but if I'm him I'd be entering these Monday qualifiers and hope lightning strikes.

Makes you wonder why the Golf Channel scrounged up a bunch of guys that can’t break 76 to be on the Big Break I when there’s at least a hundred Jhareds out there shooting 63 in big boy tournaments.

They probably wanted the dreamers in the audience to be more connected to the players, thinking that they could almost be on the show with just a few more buckets of practice balls. Heck, they can throw down an 85 sometimes.

 

The audience can't relate to going low.

Ran across this and thought of this thread.  Apparently on the senior side in SC state events Jeff Knox ( Augusta member and masters marker ) is part of the talent pool.  lol it deeper and deeper the more I look.  😳

And then  there’s this guy. Shoots -8 to win the SC am.    To compare. I missed qualifying for this event by 2 shots . even par for the qualifier got in.  Yep. It’s deep.

that being said there’s plenty of guys that hit it better than the best PGA Tour pros (some hyperbole there but I think y’all get the point) but simply can’t handle the “stuff” that comes with it. When you’re that good, legitimately that good of a player, golf is the easy part. It’s all the other stuff that’s hard. What to practice, where to practice, HOW to practice (there’s right and wrong ways), where to stay, how am I getting there, where to play, when to play, who’s my coach, do I lift during tournament weeks, diet/nutrition. Some people just simply can’t handle it. 
 

Guys like Tiger, Jack, DJ, Arnold etc they’re just better than everyone else. But between George McNeil and the best amateur player (legit player) you know? There game probably isn’t significantly different. George and Elite Am A probably both shoot 70 or under most everyday back home, but George can do it across the country on any day. 
 

I remember Butch telling someone if you’re not shooting 5/6 under at your home club where you know every little bounce and break you’re not any good. Not sure what the point of that was but it relates a little bit. There’s a lot of good players out there

Pretty tough when you shoot 63 (Cantley) on a 7400 yard golf course and some guy beats you by three shots.

I know and have played with several players in that field.

Tens of thousands of players can shoot low for one round. Relatively few can do it for 4 consecutive days (rounds).

Butch was talking about like a 12 year old KID with the above expectation. It was from his long lecture that's since been posted on Youtube.

Oh gotcha I was wondering where that came from. But I still believe in his point, if youre not under par (I wont say 5/6 under) but if you arent 3/4 under every time you play your home club, youre not any good. That is the bar I had always had in my mind, lets get every round at home in under 70 which happens more often than not.
