Guys Golf Trip(Ryder Cup Style)

Recommended Posts

So we are taking a trip next month and need some help figuring out what format and how hcp's are used.  Thinking of a scramble, best ball, shamble, and individual stroke play.  The only issue is how to get the hcps figured out.   I am the low at 3 and i think we have a 8  but the rest are 12-25 so really hard to get adjustments correct.  Anyone have expectance in doing these kind of trips?  No way we can give full hcps on scramble/schambe rounds.

If it's a 2 man scramble, the couple of times we've done this, the lowest HCP goes with the highest and then you keep pairing them up based on that.  It generally has worked pretty well for balance.  If it's a 4 man scramble, in your situation the 25 and you should be in one of the groups.    Don't ever do an alternate shot event, you'll hate life.

Yes, yes, yes.  Worst thing a bunch of am hacks can do to themselves.  Everyone will end up hating everything for a moment.

We are going to have 8 guys total.

Yeah after typing that i started thinking about the beating it would be.  Probably going to do a shamble instead.

My club has a 2-man shamble tournament every year and they do a 80% handicap allowance. Tends to even it out a bit since you don't want to give the full strokes considering the partial scramble aspect.

Last time we did this, I was the lowest cap and got stuck with the guy who shoots 115-120.  He was loving playing my shots, after the first hole I couldn't wait to be done. This was the general consensus with the 20 guys on the trip, the lower handicap players hated it.  More or less if that format was ever thrown in again, the lower cap guys would skip the trip.

I was thinking about that as well and the lower cap basically is playing stroke play all 4 rounds.  What did yall come up with for your next trip?  In the scramble/shamble did you use full hcp's or cut them in half?  It would almost be impossible for the lower caps to win if you are giving a shot or two per hole on a scramble.

We just went to a straight stroke play event using handicaps (we stole the format from another trip I do with another group).  We use our own handicaps (not usga) based on scores from the trip.  We have a guy who calculates it, I think it's based off 3 years of scores.  It's been a pretty good system and gives everybody a chance to compete.   Using this method is the best way to prevent sandbagging with caps as well, since it's kept in house and only scores from the trip are used.  We have payouts for the winner, then do payouts for closet to the pin, lowest 9 hole net and gross, and a couple of other things just to keep everybody in the mix.

We do one scramble in the event for fun.  The place we go, it's 4 guys to a room, your team is the guys you're in the room with.  Beyond that we got rid of all the team stuff and it seems to have worked out pretty good.  Unfortunately, if you're looking for Ryder Cup type stuff, this won't work.  I'll be honest tho, the Ryder Cup stuff with guys of vastly different skill levels sounds great on paper, the execution of it isn't as fun.  The only Ryder Cup stuff I've really enjoyed, is when I'm playing with guys who have similar handicaps as myself.

Thanks for the information.

One guy just mentioned doing stroke play with hcps' for 9 holes and you would play everyone once in the 4 rounds and then leave the last 9 holes for tiebreakers and such.

On a golf trip, especially to a special or premium place, most golfers will
want to play their own ball.    That leaves best ball, low net, stapleford
type matches.

One day can be best ball of partners, another best 2 balls of 4some.

If you replay an extra 9/18, then you can try a scramble or shamble.
