Ball forward, club centered at address (Moe style)

Recommended Posts

Does anyone do this Moe Norman type setup at address?  I practiced it on the range last night with some success.

Ball forward just off the front foot, club centered at address..

I found this really encourages getting into your hip bump at the top before starting your downswing. You get the weight up over your front leg and you just rotate through the ball.

The idea of placing the ball way forward in the stance (actually, I've seen it as far forward as target-side of the lead foot) is a drill for all sorts of swings that has been around a long time. It was designed to encourage getting the golfer's weight forward, one of my instructors tried it with me a while back, didn't work (but that's another story).

In the context of the SP swing I don't think that's its primary purpose. It seems to be a consequence of setting up in an impact position (hips open), then rotating back for address. I think Moe once said it was simply a way to get a "head start" on the backswing. The term "hip bump" is, again, really more a SP swing thing, but if it helps you (whatever swing you're using) then that's great.

Well let me just say that I completely dismiss the notion that Moe's swing was single plane. That is a very simplistic and inaccurate description of what he is doing. The axis of his swing definitely changes and you don't need to look any further than this setup. There's plenty of video evidence of him demonstrating his feel of sliding into his front legs prior to impact which would inherently change the plane. The key mechanics from the beginning of the downswing to prior to impact look exactly like any professional golfer, it's only his setup and straight arm that is misleading people.

I believe the credit for his uncanny accuracy can be more attributed to hitting 7 million golf balls with that super strong right hand grip. He takes forearm rotation and wrist flipping out of the equation (sacrificing power) so he is always square.

As a MDLT proponent I do something similar. I find it helps me keep my shoulders from opening up at address if the ball is forward.

Same. Moe also would swing with a closed stance to force his shoulders square and down the line. I believe Snead did the same.

I hit my best, straightest drives with a closed stance where it feels like my body is aiming right, but in reality my shoulders are nearly perfectly square to the target line.

Everything Moe did in his setup was based on a feeling of swinging down the line past the ball.

I do it but do not have a Mo Normal single plane type swing. Pretty normal looking swing.

Like others have mentioned, I notice if I have the club up near the ball(especially with driver) I have a tendency to open up my shoulder line and its very awkward trying to force my shoulders square.

As a bonus, it allows you to counter-move forward to trigger your backswing without risk of hitting the ball. Feels really athletic to be able to do so without fear of hitting the ball!
