Tempo help

My biggest swing flaw has to be my super fast tempo.   I try to slow it down but sometimes my body just takes over and snap hook here I come. Becoming super frustrating, when I swing smooth my shots are great and almost do exactly what I want them to do.  Any help appreciated on how you fixed your tempo,  I'm assuming just muscle memory and repetition would be best.

My biggest issue when my game goes south. It's a tough one, but for me it starts with going back to a short game area, and starting with fixing tempo on pitch/chip shots. For me ... tempo is consistent with all strokes. Tempo on a putt is also the same. I got a garmin truswing that can measure my tempo for a sanity check that I am going in the correct direction.

Have you used a frame counter to verify you actually have a fast tempo?

No but I know I have to when it's a snap hook left.  I'll re tee and try smooth and it's playable

I think most of us blame tempo when our actual issue is sequencing, which usually comes down to our getting the cart before the horse. We try to hit the ball instead of completing a backswing and a downswing. Feels like "quick tempo" because you got the moving parts out of order.

Could be, but poor tempo or a rushed downswing is poison for sequencing, particularly if you need to recover from a less than ideal back swing.

The Tour Tempo app is worth the money.  I have gone through a bunch of swing issues this summer and I'm coming out the other side now.  The one thing that I know I need to improve now is tempo and the tour tempo app makes it pretty simple while you are hitting balls.

Pick up a impact bag and practice a super slow take away.. I worked on mine all last winter.. it still sneaks in there once in awhile

Orange whip can help with it as well

Do you think bad tempo is caused mostly by a backswing that is too fast?  If your backswing is too slow, your swing speed will suffer.  I know the trend now, and I saw an interview with Rory where he confirmed it, is to speed up the backswing if you want to hit it further.  If you can speed up your backswing while maintaining your tempo, your clubhead speed will increase because the club has traveled the same distance in less time.  The trick to tempo is to get the backswing to downswing ratio correct.....this being said, if you have less than ideal mechanics during the back swing, you will need more time to make corrections on the way back to the ball.

I would say it all depends on the person... For me my back swing was almost faster then the follow through and that causes all sorts of problems for me... I have seen 3 golf coaches and every one of them has been trying to slow my back swing down...

My current coach talked me into picking up a impact bag last year and really focus on a slower take away... I feel like its almost in slow motion.. Coach says its still very quick lol

All in all.. my ball striking has improved leaps and bounds since I have slowed the backswing

Nice! I'm opposite, I tend to rush transition when things go south.

I have a chunk of 3/4" braided polyester rope that when I fold in half it is the length of a 5 iron.  It's nice and soft but has some heft to it.  You can't swing a big chunk of rope without good tempo.  Otherwise it slaps you on the back in your back swing or in your through swing across the back. It will also show you any out of sync hiccups and other weird movements.  It's an old school method for training tempo I learned back when I was a kid.  The old pro that showed it to me used to always say that a golf club was just a stiff rope with a head on the end of it.

When I used Tour Temp I probably played my best, most consistent stretch of golf. I eventually got away from it as my range time decreased. In fact, now, other than maybe a few swings before a round, if there are even balls out to hit, I rarely hit the range. I think you have to hit balls using the cues to prove to yourself that when you get it right it does work!
