Would you rather win The Players or an Olympic gold?

Dear Sir,

Morgan Standley paid Justin Rose $5M just to wear its name on his hat. Just one example of how lucrative the endorsement business can be.

He’s been with them for years.  US Open winners and #1 in rankings do tend to do well in endorsements.

Reading comprehension can be your friend.  I asked if Xander would suddenly find his endorsement income go way up because of the Olympic medal.  He already is loaded with endorsements.

Because Justin Rose, a US Open winner and the biggest star of English golf before he won the Olympics wouldn't have gotten that without the Olympics.. right.. lol.

I see some have been taken in by the Golf Channel relentlessly pushing this nonsense the past two weeks.

 Absolutely the Olympics- Universal recognition

Players not a major and nobody, including the average golfer cares about it

Maybe because I come from a track background, I hold the Olympics in higher regard

I was fortunate to compete and place in a regional qualifier for the 88 games and it was an awesome experience

I bet , secretly. Hideki would rather have the gold medal than a green jacket

Prime Minister probably had to be told what the Masters is

Olympic Gold was a one shot in his home country-wouldn't be a hallmark  card from a PM but probably a meet with the Emperor

Masters is every year, where a great player has a shot

Japan killing it at Olympics, 3rd in medal count including baseball gold!

The Players has a better field but the Olympics has greater prestige. My pick The British Open .

You missed the point. Endorsements is big business. That's it that's all.

My reading comprehension is just fine. for you to make a judgement based on a golf forum say more about you than me. Of course he'll receive endorsements based on his gold medal win along with his good guy personality.

Yeah and anyone good enough to win the Olympics is already a superstar getting massive endorsements for playing 30 events a year.  Olympic gold barely changes anything at all.  The money and exemptions from winning The Players trumps all of that.

Just a few who made $$$bank from Olympic gold:

Michael Phelps (swimmer)...$80M

Shaun White (snowboarder)....$60M

Usain Bolt (fastest man alive)....$90M

Carl Lewis (runner) $16M

Lee Chong Wei (badminton) $16M.....3 silver medals

* the list goes on. Golf is a real sports now and the endorsement dollars are starting to reflex that for players other than Tiger and Phil.

If a golfer can't parley a gold metal into cash.....they need a new agent.

+/_ all figures and Just my opinion.

As of today there are only two who have won Olympic Gold for playing golf in the modern era.

You can't say that about The Players champions...

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Your examples are all guys that participate in a sport where the Olympics is the pinnacle of their profession. So yeah, results are a big increase in endorsements.

Golf’s pinnacle is not a medal.

Am I playing for me or for my country? If I'm playing for me, then the players.

But is there a higher honor than winning Olympic gold for your country in your chosen sport? I don't think so, but I'm also a Vet so I feel a little different about that sort of thing.

As a Vet I used to feel all fuzzy about the Olympics but that feeling has left the building. I'll take winning the Players. And it pains me to say that.😞

I'm going with the Players and that 5 year exemption. The Olympics is cool but golf has been back for 2 Olympics and who knows if it will stay.

Hey, if it doesn't, then the club of Olympic gold medal winners becomes even more exclusive!

I don't think a gold is worthless, but a gold medal isn't the path to riches as some would like to convince us here.  Generally speaking those that turned Gold medals into multimillions did so because of multiple factors and are the fractional aberrations and often times the Olympics is the pinnacle of their sports career.  For a Pro golfer (NBA, NHL etc) the Olympics is not even close to that pinnacle.   There are far more Olympic gold winners that work regular jobs like the rest of us.  I know one Olympian that won 4 medals including 2 gold and they work a regular job in a big corporation.
