Anyone sent money and been screwed?

Bought a set of irons from a guy. Sent $800 PayPal and immediately I’ve had no communication and he blocked me from Facebook.  Luckily I did goods and services on PayPal. Started my claim But looks like it takes 2 weeks.   Anyone know how to expedite the process?

I don't believe there is any way to "expedite" the process, but glad to hear you paid G&S. Where did you do the purchase from? Sounds like it may have been Facebook Marketplace?

Ya. Facebook golf group. Don’t remember which one. The original listing is deleted so I can’t see it anymore.  But this is the guy

Man, what a clown. Bummer that happened, but sounds like you'll be getting your money back eventually. I've always been a bit weary of doing any type of transaction through facebook, whether it be a meet up or a shipping scenario.

The only way for the refund to process quicker is if he responds to paypal admitting he didn't send anything, then they'll release the funds. Otherwise you'll have to wait it out. This happened to me recently. Bought and paid for a set of irons but seller dragged his feet shipping cause his new custom irons were delayed from the maker. So the dope thought he was free to use the ones he sold

Recently,  I've been consciously trying to have a better opinion about people in general but then I read stuff like this; Sheesh! That seller was a self absorbed, selfish, jerk.

I am amazed.

I posted something on the golf group on Facebook where he sold them. And apparently a few others messaged him and he blocked them all also. He’s not responding to anyone or even to PayPal. So because he’s not responding to PayPal. The entire thing is being drug out. I assume I’ll get my money back. But will take a couple weeks because they have to “wait” for him to respond etc.

Similar has happened to me and many others.  Bought some stuff here one time and the guy disappeared.  Not sure what happens, but these people have to realize they won't make off with the little bit of cash they get.   You'll get your money back from PayPal, but it will be a bit of a wait.  I think it took 2-3 weeks to get my full refund back into my account.

I don’t understand what he was trying to do. anyway. I called PayPal yesterday and he said I should get my refund next week on the 12th.  But I did also call the police in his hometown. They verified he does live there and I can file a police report in my hometown and they will be in touch and if I press charges they will send a cop to his house to arrest him.  But he did also say that if I do receive a refund that quick. By time it gets to a defective etc and there’s no loss for me at that point, they may or may not proceed and do anything

Forget the cops, that is a total waste of your time.  Just be happy you are getting all of your money back.  It sucks, but it happens.

It's not a waste of time, mail fraud is a federal offense.

Absolutely. Most of these guys think they’re too smart to get caught or that it’s too small an amount for anyone to care so maybe a visit by the cops might start causing them to think again.

Is this an instance of mail fraud though?  Nothing was ever mailed.  Maybe interstate commerce fraud?  Will cops actually do anything for $800 fraud?

I will say it again .... it is not worth anyone's time involving any police.  I understand everyone wants to see some sort of justice, but the reality is, the facts are vague, and it will come down to "he said / she said" regarding what item was truly sent and what item was actually returned.  There is no case here.

Spin your wheels if you want to waste time and frustrate yourself.  Maybe go ahead...it will be a good learning experience....

So I've been told.  I'm waiting for all the stories of folks winning in court and all the time these ebay scammers have spent in jail   🤣

Why would someone "win in court", this isn't a civil matter. Complacency is what allows these scumbags to thrive. Even if no charges are filed, having the event on record has value, especially if the person does it again and is in a situation where there is actual theft/fraud.

Here in CA they won't do anything since they have essentially decriminalized petty theft, in other states/cities it's a different story.

I’ve been waiting for good law abiding citizens to put that to the test. Is that $950 limit a per store limit? Per day? Annually?

What’s to stop a person from going store to store grabbing $900 in products from each one? Put in a 40 hour work week and it would be a lucrative business. Write off the rented box truck you’d need as a business expense.

Per crime, which is the issue. There is no provision for repeated/habitual offenders. There was a proposition last fall to add an amendment to make tougher penalties for repeat offenders, which was voted down by those who are being victimized daily. Some will get caught, cited, released and then go right back at it the same day.

Sorry this happened OP, this stuff just sucks to hear.... it can be hard to believe in humanity sometimes with people out there like this.  I'd press for the cops to show at his door.  If he's done it to you AND others, thats a decent amount of money stolen.  Maybe it's "spinning your wheels" but at some point, someone has to push to make sure it catches up with this nozzle.

Depends on how bored they are. I'd call and ask which cops golf and go from there. You may find you get him hammered.
