Focusing on the right hip when the left side doesn't want to clear

I recently discovered the Mike Adams teaching philosophy. His primary argument is that an individual’s biomechanics will dictate their optimal swing. He starts each lesson with an assessment to figure out what swing to teach a given player. For example, my arms are shorter than my height, so he recommends going to a flatter “hip plane” backswing. His biomechanics assessment also looks at where your weight wants to go in the backswing; I qualify as a “rear post” golfer.

 

While I didn’t get a lesson with Mike, I’d read enough to try applying some of his recommendations for my profile (hip plane, rear-post, side-cover/on-top) at the range and then on the course. I’ve never hit the ball better in my life. In previous online lessons I’ve taken, one of the big focuses was always clearing my left side. When I focused on doing this, it felt extremely forced/uncomfortable, my shots were generally weak, and it ultimately led (imo) to back issues. The whole “rear-post” thing freed me up to forget about the left hip, and instead just let my right side do what it wants and then get around through the ball. It’s far more comfortable (and thus, consistent) and powerful for me. 

 

Has anyone else had success letting their trail hip dominate vs forcing their left hip to clear when it doesn’t want to?

One big issue is the lack of a polished source for all of Mike's information. You definitely have to do some digging, and things can get confusing as some of the material has evolved over the past decade. Apparently him and Terry Rowles are going to publish a book this year.

 

There is an "ultimate golf lesson" package you can purchase here for $250 which includes 12 sessions and has a variety of guest instructors/researchers (e.g. Terry Rowles, David Edel, Dr. Phil Cheetham, Dr. Sasho MacKenzie, Dr. Scott Lynn, Dr. Mike Duffy). This will provide the most updated info, but I haven't purchased it yet. Some of the sessions are available for free: D1S1 (overview begins ~22 min), D1S2, D5S9

I also recently discovered Mike Adams and E.A. Tischler. I did the self assessment and found out I'm a side-on, front post golfer. I haven't gotten to the course yet but I'm flushing it in the backyard net. I watched a lot of EA Tischler's videos on YouTube (eagolfpro) and they take a bit of work to find advice specific to your biodynamic pattern but it's there if you dig.

I hope you're still hitting it well from the right hip. Funny how we're both feeling the opposite pressures but hitting it better.
