Driving iron on a budget?

PanchiCab

Recommended Posts

I'm done with hybrids, after trying to use them for years i finally give up on them, main miss is high toe so aka hook to the rough (no matter what shaft) so i'm looking for a DI to fill the gap between 3w(265) and 4i (215) and i think loft 17/19 should be ok

Search for a while on ebay for options cause i don't have access to a fitting in my area

Any good options that don't break the bank? i'm on a budget, want to keep it under 150 and bias to graphite shaft

- UDI 790?

- T-mb? (u500 are way too expensive)

- HMB?

Info if it helps

Irons Mizuno mp53 1° weak w/Modus 120x

Driver SS: 113

7i SS: 92 and avg carry 175

Stock ballflight: high and draw/hook

After my GAPR sells, I'm getting these and putting graphite shafts in them. One will go in the bag, I think.

I have a 17* 716 Tmb 2 iron with a Project X Catalyst 80 6.0 that is collecting dust ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ PM me and I’ll send pics!

If you like the Modus 120X than you may be good with the project X catalyst at 6.0

It has a lot of kick but very smooth. If you have a moderate tempo, then the shaft works very well.

I replaced the Tmb with a 18° Adams DHY with a Matrix Deus shaft, because the DHY is more forgiving. I carry them both close to the same distance, but the TMB gets more roll out by far

my swing speed is the same as yours… tour average. I’m have a moderate tempo and transition, and I am not “overpowering“ the shaft.

i’ve hit some of the longest iron shots I’ve ever hit with this 2 iron, but I was looking for some thing that’s a little more my speed since I don’t play that much anymore.

I only hit it at the range now for fun

I picked up a Sub 70 699U for $99 earlier this year. Great club, forgiving and long. I’m far from a single handicap and this club is money for me. They also have a pro version.

Look for an MP-h4 or h5 head only or full club.  I have a MP-h4 3i that I put on an Aldila NVS 85HYB shaft and and is great.  Still launches high and is easy to hit.  Plus I think the MP-H range has 1 and 2 irons....  Should be very affordable.

I'm looking at one, also.  How is it off the fairway?  I have a G400 driving iron and it's great off the tee.  Not so great off the fairway.

There seems to be different style of clubs that all fall under DI.

Some are higher launching hybrid type like Ping Crossovers, U510, DHY’s, TEE CBX Ironwood…… etc

Some are mid launch and less forgiving, more workable than the hybrid style, geared for better ball strikers TMB, HMB, U500, UDI…. Etc! (I think the Haywood falls in this category)

it seems to boil down to what people are looking for, their ball striking ability and speed.

I have the speed to hit the less forgiving, more workable, lower launching DI’s, but I feel my ball striking ability has diminished with little play, injury and arthritis, so I choose to play a more hybrid style that launch higher, and are far from a “players looking” iron.

I hit my TMB around 95ft high, but I can knock it down to a stinger type shot to around 55-60ft high.  I can’t do that with my DHY. I can go as low as 80ft, but fly it around 105-115 ft regularly. On the flip side, if I hit my TMB low on the face (that’s my miss), I lose more distance, and I find the DHY to be more consistent, especially off the deck. There is a trade off. If your an exceptional ball striker then the U500 types are the Bees Knees, but a 6+ handicap, the higher launching options are a better fit IMHO

My favorite is a Maltby FDI 2i, bent to 18 or 17 degrees.  Find a used Nunchuk shaft, hybrid or driver version off Ebay.  Assemble and adjust swing weight to your preference in the D2-D4 range.  Golf Works has the heads and head weights.  I'm only 95-100mph SS and my 18 degree version goes 225 off the tee dead straight 90% of the time.

I'll add to the Sub70 love, decided to add a driving iron to my bag rotation again this year and based on brief research and price I went with Sub70 699U Pro. It feels awesome and is as good as anything my buddies have in their bags. After hitting my Sub70, many were interested in getting their own. They start at a price you can't beat and have multiple options for upgrading with great customer service! I went with a Ventus Blue hybrid shaft (upcharge) but still paid the same or less as most stock OEM brands.

Callaway Apex UW - Hzrdus RDX Black 80x

Under $150? Look for a hollow-headed or cavity-back GI 3i with a graphite shaft. If you want to fine-tune, get one with parallel tip 0.370" hosel. Then, you can plug in any number of hybrid shafts.

A local pro built a similar club out of a cavity-back Nike Covert Vs 3i head. It survives as his clearout and fairway finder club through two different sets of newer Srixon Z-series irons.

Another plug for the Sub 70 699U or 699U Pro depending on what fits your eye. If you have any questions reach out to them via phone and they’ll make sure you get plugged in with the right head and shaft.

I have similar speeds and ball flights and have tried every utility/hybrid/5wood under the sun, and for me the srixon zx utility has been what i have been looking for. Stock flight is mid but  I can flight it high or low easy. Forgiving enough- its just all around great. Only has one downside, just not as good out of rough as other options but thats a tradeoff ill accept. If you look hard enough you can find a good used one for about 150.

Check out the Dynacraft driving irons from either Hireko or Monark Golf. I built one up with a Tensei Blue OEM hybrid shaft from Monark & love it. Prolly have about 50 bucks in the whole build & it feels really solid.

I agree with @Nixhex524 Played an mp h5 2i a couple of seasons ago and it was so easy to hit and launch.  Feels great too!  Can be had for cheap.  Save money on the head and spin a little more on a really good shaft.

2010 Mizuno MP fli hi.  Loft for loft I haven’t found anything better, and I’ve tried them all. I was impressed with the Titleist u500, but for the money the small yardage gains weren’t worth the money. Maybe 5 yards…. MAYBE.
