New hybrid-to replace G425?

Gareth

Recommended Posts

So I bought a new G425 4 hybrid with the Tensei Orange Pro shaft 80 stiff blind. I know, but COVID etc…..

And now I’ve gamed it in 2 rounds I have yet to hit any shot anything like I would have hoped/expected…….yes, they all (I) stunk which has never happened to me before as I’m a decent iron/hybrid kind of guy usually.

As a rule I've had success with the “boxier” players type of hybrid heads as a legacy of my Sonartec history I guess but I’d still like a little (lot) forgiveness of course.

What should I be looking at please? Thinking TM Sim 2 Hybrid or perhaps one of the Callaway Apex 21’s? I usually get on well with CB shafts like the Tensei Orange so I don’t “think” it’s that per se that isn’t working in the Ping but I do struggle a bit with the look of the Ping G425 hybrid which I class (think) of being a more fairway looking head.

Hit me up with suggestions please.

I would consider a shaft change. For me, the head is incredible. Best ever. Long, high, and very straight.

I agree you might want to look at the shaft. At a minimum take a look at the swing weight. I recently tested Ping fairway woods and a few configurations felt terrible. The fitter measured the swing weight swapped out the weight, and boom, the club felt great. Actually, the clubs felts so nice, I bought two on the spot. I should mention, both have Tensei CK Pro Orange shafts too.

What's the problem?

Too light, too heavy, block it to the right, snap hook, or it's just a visual thing?

as they say, ymmv as I have that exact setup (4H, orange stiff) along with 5H and like it so much I ordered 6 and 7H with the same shaft.

For something different, maybe Cobra King Tech hybrid. I think it is a deeper face than the G425, is adjustable both at the hosel and with bottom weighting. If G425 didn't float the boat, that Cobra would be my next stop.

What hybrid did you used to hit well?

Current Ping hybrids, just like their fairways, have shallower heads (in height) and flatter soles than earlier models and other brands to help get the ball in the air.

So, shaft fun aside, I'd look at hybrids with deeper faces.

The Apex comes to mind. As does the TM SIM (not the Max).

Something with that squared off high toe look that was the Adams signature.

To be honest I've yet to get the damn thing elevated in the air at all!! Everything is out the neck and very low......plus I'm not a huge fan of the club at address compared to what I've used to.

It could well be the shaft but I'm not convinced a shaft change would 100% sort the issue as I've had Tensei Orange Pro in other (not Hybrids though) fairway clubs before and a couple of Ping drivers too. I tend to take the view if something isn't working and you have given it enough of chance to......it's moved to the naughty step before the "for sale" step!

Had lots of success with the both Callaway Apex Pro '19 which is a very similar look to the old Adams that you referenced, and the Epic hybrid (forget which one but not the Flash) - as well as the TM Sim 2 Rescue that I have my eye on. After the Apex Pro '19/Epci I had the Mavrik Pro which was a little disappointing compared to its predecessors due to the curved head/sole design. I was looking at the new Apex Pro '21 but cannot understand at all why the heck Callaway fit that club with a glued shaft and the Apex game improvement version (which is huge) gets the option to swap shafts out as it's got the adaptor......bizzare really.

Just bought a Ping CB70 Alta Red hybrid shaft to throw in the G425 to try that out…..if no luck, the club is on the chopping block!

I had the same experience with the 425s.  The heads are just too light and the stock counter balance shafts make the problem worse. Going down the shaft rabbit hole wasn’t worth the work. Just got fit for PXG Protos and boom.  Also went with a much heavier shaft than usual 65g hybrid shafts.  Can’t beat the price as well.

I suspect I’ll end up with something else but thought it was worth a try with the OEM CB70 shaft before selling the G425.

Interesting comment about the light head as I do feel it’s a club (in my set up) that’s a great shaft looking for a better (heavier?) head perhaps.

Will see.

I struggled with the feel of the stock CB70 Slate shaft in my G425 22*. I tried all of the aftermarket ones, Tensei Orange, Tensei Blue, Ping Tour.  Final shaft I tried was the Ping CB70 Red stiff from the G410 and it worked better than all the rest. It made all the difference. I added a wee bit o’ hot melt for swingweight and its perfect!
