For those who sometimes ride or walk, do you own two bags?

Recommended Posts

I have been riding in a cart for most of my golf career mostly for time and pace but now that I swing more consistently and I'm not searching for balls all the time, I am considering walking when time allows and using a push cart.

My question to the people who do both, do you have two different bags, a riding cart bag and a push cart/walking bag?  I wonder because the way I organize my clubs in the cart is to have the woods and longer clubs furthest away and the shorter clubs up front near the putter well, I have a Sun Mountain C-130.  This way everything is visible and easy to see and pull out.

For the photos I've seen of a push cart, this orientation is switched, it seems the woods are now nearest the putter and the shorter clubs at the lowest point of the now angled bag, leaving all the pockets still accessible.  Do I still use my C-130 and switch the clubs around depending on what I'm doing?  Do you own two bags to make using the push cart easier?  I love the C-130 for riding but it is a pain to take to the range and practice.  I end up just laying it on the ground or trying to lean it up against a chair but this is less than optimal as it wants to tilt a lot.

Now I feel I need a stand bag and a cart bag but always transferring stuff between them seems to be a pain as well.

Yep. We own our own cart, but there are many times I either walk, or want a smaller bag for traveling to other courses. I have a TaylorMade staff bag that stays on the cart (huge top, 6 way dividers, super cart bag, heavier than a hippo ....). I also have a SunMountain 2.5 that I carry, or take when I'm going to other courses.

I keep both stocked with tees, balls, gloves, so all I have to do is transfer the clubs.

I have an electric push cart that I use with a cart bag, but when I go to other courses I swap into a stand bag as I normally ride and I hate having to lug the cart bag around.

Well I was looking into switching from my Sun Mountain C-130 (5-way) into a Ping DLX or Pioneer but I can't get past the idea of a 14-way top.  I hate how the clubs get in the way of the putter and come out with it every time you have to pull it out.

Maybe I'll keep the Sun Mountain and look at a stand bag and push cart for walking and practice time!!

I have a hybrid staff/stand bag that I use (virtually) all the time.  It is sturdy enough to handle being on a cart and offers plenty of storage for my need, but it is also small enough to fit on the pushcart that I use for walking rounds in the cooler months.  I've found no real issue with the orientation of the clubs and how it might affect my enjoyment of the round.

Now, if you are simply looking for a little old fashioned enabling so that you feel comfortable making another golf purchase, well then, I must say you've come to the right spot!

I detest cart bags. If I want to go to the driving range and hit some balls, I don't want to count on a bulky cart bag standing up on its own. Plus, getting cart bags from auto trunk to golf cart (if you can't bring cart to bag) is like carrying an awkward suitcase.

I have a Sun Mountain 4.5 14-Way now but previously had a Nike Performance Hybrid 14-Way bag that I’ve used regardless if I ride, carry or thrown on a push cart. I messed with my club organization in the beginning and once I found this setup, there’s no other setup that I would use since it works for everything.

From top to bottom my divider slots are 3-4-4-3 and this is my setup.

Putter-SW-LW

Driver-4-5-6

3W-7-8-9

3H-PW-GW

I would say one hybrid stand bag for both riding or throwing on a push cart is plenty. Although my bags have been decent to carry, I could see the “need” for getting a super light bag for carrying like a Sun Mountain 2.5 or something.

I only ride when I'm forced to by either everyone else in the group riding which would make it awkward for me to walk, or it's one of those courses in the mountains where you might not make it physically with all the hills much less actually be able to play decent (specifically Primland in Virginia or Kapalua Plantation, no chance I'm walking either of those but they're absolutely worth playing anyways) - so I just keep my Ping Hoofer as it is for normal walking play. If I get to the course and they won't let me walk or strongly advise against (usually I call ahead to be sure I can walk and thus avoid this issue) I just put all the extra items in the cart basket.

I will admit there's a presence and seriousness to a nice staff style bag, especially if you've made it your own rather than just buying off the rack. The headcovers stand up better and you can add in an umbrella / alignment sticks, etc. Mine (pictured below) only comes out when I'm just going to the range that day and know I won't be walking, and most importantly, when I'm playing well enough to be worthy of the setup.

I have a C130. This is how my clubs are whether I’m riding or using a push cart. The heads just flip back the other way when leaned back on the push cart.

I have a c-130 that I just got into because my hoofer wasn’t keeping enough weight on the front of the Forecaddy (which I love). I much rather walk than ride any day.

So now I have a bigger bag to keep everything in and works regardless of my method of transportation for the day.

That is what I’m curious about.  With the clubs now going the other way, won’t the 4,5, & 6 be banging into the wood shafts?

They pretty much just sit between/against the head covers. It’s not something I’ve ever been remotely concerned about.

I have an old Ping Traverse lightweight cart bag that I used for both golf cart and walking with a push cart. The top of the Traverse doesn't angle upward in one direction like most bags, so I could reverse my clubs in the bag (swapping the positions of woods and wedges) when I switched from golf cart use to push cart.

I used a small Sunday bag if I was walking with no cart.

Now I use my Linksmaster for everything.

A small update. If you fill the pockets it gets pretty wide. May go back to the drawing board and get something that doesn’t expand so much horizontally.

I have 3 bags but really only use 2 of them.  Linksmaster or a Jones Utility Rover.  I also have a Jones Original in Camo but don't use it much.  If I know for certain I am riding in a cart I'll use the Linksmaster, otherwise it is just whatever I'm feeling that day.  I don't carry much so I can easily switch bags in probably less than a minute.

I caved and bought a cart specific bag because mine does not fit well on the back of the cart. It's been used twice in the last 2 years lol I hardly ever ride. And I picked up a carry bag that was just too good a deal to pass up. So I guess yea technically I have one for carry, one for my push cart, and one in the event were gonna ride for the car. But the push cart bag sees 98% of the useage in my case.

Too bad your car bag is such a beast haha, cause they usually work ok on push carts as well. But yea that one might be a bit heavy to push around. I just picked up the cheap wilson cart bag when it was on sale in the event were gonna ride I swap my gear over to that bag. I knew going in it wouldn't see much use and didn't wanna drop 200 on something I wasn't gonna get the use out of.
