Hole by hole fly over app - Would that help you pick a course you would want to play / Improve your game?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My name is Jacob and I'm a student currently studying human centered design. For a project I've decided to take my design knowledge as well as my aerial videography skills to try and produce a user friendly app that golfers can use either before they pick a certain course, or while they are out golfing. The app would consist of every hole of a course being flown over by with a drone giving the golfer a view of the entire course, as well as what unknown obstacles may lay ahead on that hole that you might not be able to see from ground level.

I'm looking for honest opinions as to whether you would actually use such an app. Critical feed back it part of the design process so if you do choose to answer give me the most honest one you have on this concept, it all helps with the design of a potential product in the end.

Thanks

I think something like this would have value for golfers. A couple quick things to think about. One, getting access to every course for drone flyover may be challenging. Two, might need to add yardage numbers, etc in various places within flyovers to provide better detail for viewers. I'm sure there is more to add. Let me know if you want to hire my expertise at some point. 😂 Good luck!

There's google maps and GPS apps/devices that give you the picture of the entire hole.  I think all this would do is give another tool to golfers that would aid in slowing down play even more.

I enjoy it when a course's web site has a set of drone flyover videos of each hole. Whether it's to check out a course I've never seen but planning on playing or just seeing a bird's eye view of a course I already know well.

But in terms of preparing for a round or during play, I don't think drone flyovers give me any particularly useful information beyond what I'd see on a GPS map using satellite imagery. The drone shots are just cool and fun.

P.S. I sometimes daydream about real-time drone imagery during a round. It would be cool if like in a Sci-Fi action movie I could send up a little hummingbird-sized drone and find out just who it is up ahead that's slow-playing the entire course behind them...maybe even fit a tiny rocket launcher to light up their backsides and encourage them to move along.

I would love to know the theory behind this assumption?

Which part? This type of tool already exists in numerous places so that part isn't an assumption.   If we added flyover, now a group will have to sit and watch the flyover before teeing off, then bust out whatever other tool they have to figure out how far those fairway bunkers are that they can't reach because they're playing the back tees and they only hit it 180.  It's not an assumption, I could bust out my phone almost any given round I play and film people doing this.

This type of service/question would probably be better presented to golf courses to get something they could put on their website.  I know many already have flyover videos.  As an app, I personally don't see the value when you have so many other tools already that you can see an overhead and get yardage data.

The Golf Pad app already has this feature.

And it's free.

image.png.17f6edfdb1261ec5e1c875e681c1f383.pngAnother option is BlueGolf. Thousands of courses around the USA have entered their course info into this software. Among the site's features in Course Tour sector:

  • Hole diagram (left) with mouse-controlled gold yardage measuring tool.
  • Upper Left: Clicking the + will pop out an enlarged image of green complex for hole.
  • Top Left: HOLES MAP (in blue oval) accesses area map showing holes in relation to each other.
  • Other features (not shown in example): Scorecard, with array possible for different sets of tees; general information about the course; links to tournaments course may be hosting.

To enter the BlueGolf network, a course must create an account. From there, the course is responsible for creating hole maps from a GPS module, entering scorecard data and populating other functions. Thus, some courses have only sparse information on their site.

Annbriar GC has one of the better BlueGolf sites.

Everyday golfers must register for a free BlueGolf account to access the site's full functionality.

Agreed that a lot of other apps have this functionality, however...

Some of the ones mentioned only have a static aerial view of the hole and layout. Some do this with satellite imagery, some do a 2D rendering. Either give about the same amount of info that I think the majority of players would find useful.

Some apps provide a virtual flyover of the hole and while visually it's cool, it leaves out one thing the 2D renderings don't help with: elevation changes.

In my opinion, the only really useful additional info an actual quality drone flyover video can provide is a more accurate representation of elevation changes, slopes, etc that are very hard to depict in drawings.

But, as others have mentioned, it would be prohibitively difficult and expensive to produce and provide such videos on a wide scale.

From a design study perspective, I can see how this might be an interesting development for inclusion of mixed media and possibly augmented reality concepts into apps. Imagine a flyover video of the hole shot at eye level, then combined with GPS location, providing the user with relative direction and distances to visible and unseen points on the hole. I admit it's fanciful and beyond most players needs, but I can see the value of exploring it for the purposes of application and interface design. It would make a nice concept project just doing it on a single course.

Good luck!
